Is there any chance of turning the "Old Hat Search" link in the drop-down Search dialogue into an alternative submit button, so that you can just enter the URL directly into the input field and execute the search immediately without having to manually go to a separate page in order to input your URL?
It would just make the process that much easier and nicer (which might also encourage people to use it more).

Or make "old hat search" a checkbox, instead of/in addition to a link. Although that just might be confusing.

I also suggest placing a title attribute on the Old Hat link/button/checkbox text that explains exactly what an "Old Hat Search" is.
