I haven't completed the game yet, it's just that I couldn't let it go that way... I saw it coming ever since we left Paris and this dumbass didn't noticed anything wrong???
I'm talking about Jock here... This guy is a hell of a pilot, he has zillions of flight hours logged and he didn't react as the chopper was making strange noises and rumble? Hell, that's impossible! Even I (read: JC of course) had a bad feeling since I found this guy dead in Everett's helipad...
So actually I guess I'm in the last level since I have no chopper to take me out in the end... And even if I had one the pilot's dead anyway...
I'm not saying I don't like the game anymore, but they could have made it less obvious... I don't know yet if it's possible to change that. I mean, maybe if I kill the guy in the helipad in Paris, Jock stops the machine and take the bomb out. I don't think so, but it could be, although I heard nothing changed the ending except what you do in the very last level...
So, what's my point? My point is, it's a great game, but WTF??? I (read JC, again) was continuously asking Jock about this rumble, I wondered about this strange guy in Paris and the corpse behind the canisters, I just thought the chopper was gonna blow up at some point of the story, the nearer of the end the better. And Jock didn't do anything. I could have let him sipping his booze in New York as well...
Okay, end of the critics now... RIP, Jock... You were stupid on this one, but I'll miss you. I still think the dev team could have made the sniper launch a missile on the chopper anyway, instead of making us players waiting for a bomb to explode... It was just so predictable... :(

If you had gone back and talked to Everett about the mechanic, you would have confirmed that the mechanic was an imposter. You would have killed the mechanic and Jock would have disabled the bomb.
rachel on 26/6/2002 at 12:59
Okay :)
Well, I don't think I'd have gone all the way back to Everett... On the next game I was going to kill the mech, to see what happens... Of course, maybe I'd have found out eventually...
But what bothers me a bit is that they make us wait for the bomb to explode and we can't do anything to it once you leave Paris... I just knew there was gonna happen, see? Instead of endlessly reminding the player about Paris, and I don't think you can play otherwise as there are no choice in the dialogs, they should have placed the bomb and then do nothing until the explosion...
Then, JC would think "Yeah, of course, that guy in Paris..."
That's about the only really bad thing I found in the game anyway...

I was devastated when the chopper blew up in Area 51 - Jock was the only person throughout the game you could depend on to be there, and was actually remotely pleasant towards you. I started a new game soon afterwards, and spent some quality time in the Underworld with him, feeding him beers :cheeky:.
It's a shame that you can't do more to save him, and that the only way you can is by killing a mechanic. Ah well. As averroes said - they should have given you another chance, really.

Poor Jock.:(
He was my best-est best friend! I remember how we met at the Underworld Bar, swapping war stories. He liked to talk about Top-Super-Secret-God-Clearance Area 51. I told him stories too, like how I once killed myself with a gas grenade, and how I once blew an NSF terrorist into chunks of meat with a LAM.
We were best buddies. He always said he was a pilot cause he didn't ask questions, but he sure as hell answered mine. Hell, one of the last things he said to me was "J.C! I just spotted a sniper in the control tower!". And before that, he had helped me save Paul, and had on more than one occasion warned me of trouble, thanks to his all-seeing infrared gear.
I could only sit stunned as my best friend disappeared in blast and puff of smoke.:( Screw everyone else; Manderly was a snake, Tracer Tong just wanted me to owe him something, Everett just wanted to take over the world, using me as his one man army, and ALL of them pretended to be my friend. As far as I'm concerned, they can all go to hell. Jock WAS my friend, and he stood by me, whether I was blasting terrorists, para-military World-Taker-Overers, or French policemen. (Sorry... lemme rephrase that. I knocked em out. I swear! Really! )
Maybe I'll make a poem about Jock. Someday...:(
Jock, wherever you are, I drink this ByteCola in your name! Bottoms up!

Well thats great about Jock. Really it is. BUT, let me ask you something. I never let him die. It Was obvious my first time through the game that there was something "odd" about the mechanic. Hell whenever you highlight him it SAYS "Odd Mechanic"!!!! COME ON PEOPLE! I mean if you just thought the mechanic was Odd, WHAT ABOUT THE DEAD BODY!!! It wasn't exactly HIDDEN!!! Geez, some people. Its OBVIOUS that they play DX Quake style. Unless of course you don't say anything to him just to see what happens... But then you shouldn't be copmplaining... Oh well.
/end Rant and general Criticzing (SP) whatever...

stainboy, the alive mechanic isnt actually a mechanic, he's a spy. I hope that helps your conscience. :)
stainboy on 6/7/2002 at 10:36
Yeah, I suppose so D'Juhn. And PowerCrazy - I think I just got used to the sight of dead bodies, but my problem was that the game expected you to go by the ol' "eye for an eye" rule. Just because you see a dead mechanic, should you automatically assume that it was the other guy that killed him, and take retribution? A better way of handling the situation would be if it had been mentioned when you talked to Jock. Something along the lines of...
JC: You know what happened to that mechanic?
Jock: Which mechanic? Oh right, the dead one right next to my helicopter. No. You should check it out - he could have planted a bomb or something.
JC: I'll check with Everett.
Woulda helped... ;)

Stainboy, know exactly what you mean.
I saw the Mechanic, thought something was wrong, but didn't want to go back to Everett. (I think I talke to his bodyguard or what that is, but he wasn't a big help either)
Let's look at how my conversation with Jock would have looked:
JC: "Hey, Jock, there's a dead mechanic around the corner!!"
Jock: "Can we fly now?"
JC: "Did you hear me?!? There's a dead mechanic!"
Jock: "Are you ready to go?"
JC:  (Giving up slowly ) "I don't think the mechanic is real."
Jock: "Get in and we'll start."
JC: (almot finished) "I bet the false mechanic sabotaged the Heli. It'll probably crash when we're in the air."
Jock: "Look, are you gonna pick around it all day, or are you gonna get in?"
JC: *shrugs* "OK, if you don't want to listen..."
And then some people talk about the many possibilities you have in the game...
Firefreak on 7/7/2002 at 11:27
During my yet first game I also took out that mechanic - and wondered what would happen if one didn't. Now I know, and I'm glad about what I've done :)
But the title 'Odd mechanic' was (for me) unnecessary - I already suspected that when I talked to him. (ok, why did I talk to him? "Uhh, guy, there's a buddy of you lying behind the crates -- too much booze then, huh?" ;) )
