for what it's worth, and even though i wouldn't word it the same angrier-than-thou way, i gave up fo3 for many of the reasons that koki mentioned

I can only assume Koki was molested repeatedly and often by someone now employed by Bethesda

Complaining about a game that he didn't play? Well, at least we know it's actually Koki.

Your loss.
Moving on, koki's complaints can be completely nullified by one fact: Fallout 3 is a video game and makes no apologies whatsoever for being such. It wasn't a 'newkewlarr wasteland' sim, it was a game. It was fun as shit, and a lot of that fun stemmed from it being unapologetically unrealistic and exaggerated.
protip: you shouldn't have to have read high brow novels to enjoy games for what they are...I am SO sorry that you can't lower yourself down enough to simply suspend disbelief enough to fucking enjoy yourself for a session in front of the monitor.

No need to accuse me of being unable to 'lower myself' to gaming standards.
I just spent ~50 hours in Just Cause 2 and still growing. Talking Beth, at least 200 in Morrowind and maybe 60-70 in Oblivion. I can enjoy that stuff.
Yet FO3 was plain boring and completely unfun due to the exacerbated sum of all of Oblivion's faults (most highlighted by Koki). More power to you if you managed to get into the game, but don't suppose that what makes a game fun in the first place is the same for everyone.
I'm not even comparing FO3 to the originals, which I'm not really fond of. But nevermind. Like with Bioshock, I must be part of the oh-so-cool hate crowd.
Back to sending airplanes crashing down on whales.

My bad. The only part I aimed at you was the 'your loss' statement. I was just saying that I think you really lost out skipping it. the rest was aimed squarely at koki. I will edit my post to reflect that. Sorry.

No bad feelings obv. :) I really tried to get into it but couldn't get past the first quests, especially in Megaton. I never saw a coherent universe, rather writers trying too hard to develop interesting storylines, modelers and texture artists trying too hard to make a 3D Fallout game, UI and engine designers trying too hard to... well do nothing, etc. Bland, bland, bland and boring Oblivion with guns*. With a broken RP system. I realise I come out as insulting, and I won't shit any more on the thread but I'm almost sorry I couldn't enjoy it like some of you did :/
*I went there, but that's really the best way I find to describe it.

What's more is that the Fallout setting itself promotes this. You're in an alternative history setting where America seemed perpetually trapped in 1950's culture; ie the internet, email evolved on large Mainframes + terminals running on vacuum tubes. It's very unlikely for cultural development to remain stunted like that on such a large scale, IRL. Radiation causing mutations + MAKING THINGS BIGGER vs. everything just dying from exposure like it does in reality.
The Fallout series always had largely foregone reality in favour of a strong basis in "(

Such as (
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Kill_the_rat_god) Rat Gods and characters such as Smiley who live without food indefinitely in isolated conditions?
To my mind, while all three games project a fairly consistent image and atmosphere, there is more than enough variance in terms of style, gameplay and narrative to make each instalment a unique yet familiar experience.
