I think we just got to the uncanny valley.

Henke: If you didn't know that she was CGI, would you have noticed anything wrong? I'm asking because I wouldn't have. It's only the uncanny valley if there are small things that give you the feeling that something's wrong.

Her mouth seriously looks like it's been mapped on sideways or it's just too wide for her face but whatever it is, it's fucking weird and really distracts me.
I also think when she moves her head the eyes and mouth don't seem to mesh well with the motion animation.
Still, pretty minor nitpicking if they could it; the actual mapping of facial expressions are pretty bang on though.

I dunno. To me she doesn't look weirder than, say, Toni Colette. There's definitely some minor weirdness there, but it's well within the range of human weirdness as far as I'm concerned. Scots, if you had seen the video without knowing that it was CGI, do you think you would have realised that she's not a real person?

Absolutely impossible to answer, but my mind was reacting before I recognised the fact that she WAS the animation then my mind quickly caught up with the background knowledge.

Fair enough. Perhaps I'm just less critical - or more accustomed to weirdness. I mean, the Swiss are weird... :D

Umm... after watching the YouTube video I was going to come back and say "It'd be nice if they'd actually show a proper example" so it fooled me. I think mostly what fooled me was the little head movements and things like that, I thought those are the things that animators never really capture, which is explained by the fact that they just mapped a face onto a real body. Which could also explain why it looks slightly odd. I did think she had a slightly strange face but as Thirith said, some people just have strange faces.

Same here, the first thought I had was what a cutie, and only because of the title I realized it was CG before it became obvious from the video itself.

Well like I said, it was a little creepy to watch, I could defenitely tell that something was wrong right from the start. Her face doesn't always keep up with the movement of her head. It's never more than 1 or 2 frames off, but in a few places it looks like her face is being dragged along by her head. The fact that everything else in the scene is real makes it really hard to tell just what is wrong with the picture.
