Bump.
We're still on. Keep the suggestions coming, and talk it up. What's your fancy for the TTLG Sorsakala Meet?
TJKeranen on 7/5/2006 at 21:19
So can the date be lockzored to 17.6.? I should make up my schedules at some point for the other stuff I need to do while there.
mol on 7/5/2006 at 22:11
I'd vote yes on that. Why not? Let's get it settled, and we can move on to planning.

Groovy. Next step: is there anything besides a picnic and getting plastered in some bar of choice that anyone would like to try out? Bowling? Parachuting? Cockfighting? Attending a mess? Me? LARPing? Go-karting? Making biscuits? Blowing shit up? Sightseeing? Seeing a movie? Going to the zoo? Going to the amusement park? Shopping?
We should think of something in case the weather is not good. If it's nice and sunny, I think we'll just end up spending the day prancing about outside. (before getting plastered in some bar of choice)

Well, if the setting is Suomenlinna and the weather is nice then that would make the activity list easier. There's shopping at the harbour market, the ferryride, sightseeing, and of course staking out a picnic spot and eating and getting drunk and talking loudly before moving on to the panimoravintola ;)
It'd be nice to do something in Helsinki proper as well of course, for instance in the evening. So, um.

Sighseeing is always a good idea, specifically in the (
http://www.ihalines.fi/english/index.html) Helsinki archipelago on a a boat. There are several sightseeing cruise lines operating from Helsinki. Even for those who are familiar with Helsinki, seeing the city from the sea, and the surrounding archipelago, is often a new and wonderful experience. If the weather is nice, this could be a good option. The sightseeing cruises take anything from one to four hours or so, depending on the route.
Generally speaking, I'd suggest outdoors activities during the daytime, especially if the weather is in our favor, and something nice and relaxing where people have a chance to talk and get to know each other. (
http://www.suomenlinna.fi/index.php?lang=eng) Suomenlinna picnic is still a great idea, weather permitting.
Some ideas for places to visit:
(
http://www.nba.fi/en/seurasaari_openairmuseum)
Seurasaari: "The open-air museum of Seurasaari is located on a beautiful green island just a few kilometres from the heart of Helsinki. The island is a tranquil oasis in the midst of the city and at the museum the traditional Finnish way of life is displayed in the cottages, farmsteads and manors of the past four centuries that have been relocated from around Finland." So not a stuffy museum, but a nice outdoors experience.
(
http://www.hel2.fi/zoo/index_eng.html) The Korkeasaari Zoo. Another nice outdoors place to visit.
And there's (
http://www.saunasaari.fi/index_e.html) Saunasaari. "Sauna culture and peace of the countryside in the heart of Helsinki". Well, the first two parts are right, but it's not quite "in the heart of Helsinki", seeing as it's an island and a 15 minute ferry ride away, but hey, two out of three ain't bad.
And of course, there's the (
http://www.linnanmaki.fi/en) Linnanmäki amusement park for all ages. The (
http://www.sealife.fi/page.php?page_id=43) SeaLife is also in Linnanmäki.
(*Paging Morrgan*)There are also several beautiful nature reserves and trails in and around Helsinki. If you've never seen those, they are also great places to visit. A sense of untouched wilderness, beautiful lakes, ponds, cliffs and wildlife.
The best pubs in and around Helsinki are St. Urho's Pub (real ales, no background music) and The Gallows Bird in Espoo, another great pub with real ales and a proper mood. Of course, there are several other really good ones.
If the weather's not going to favor us, we need to find something to door inside. For food, a Mexican fiesta is always a good choise, and I guess (
http://www.cantinawest.net/) Cantina West is still the place to go. Right in the heart of the city, close to the market, the Esplanadi parkway, Stockmann etc.

Zomg, straight from a travel brochure? :p

Oh yeah. Take me there and you'll never get me out.
For entertainment, I suggest watching Vigil try some bowling. I have sadly never seen it myself, but I'm told it's quite an event.

Haha! But bowling could actually be a great idea, especially Glow Bowling (hohtokeilaus), which I've never tried. Also, it's been some 22 years since I've tried bowling, so I suppose Vigil and I could entertain the lot of you as a comedy duo of sorts.
I checked that (
http://www.tapiolankeilahalli.fi/main.php?cat=hohto) Tapiolan Keilahalli, which is but a bus ride away from Helsinki center, has glow bowling on Saturdays from 17:00 - 23:00 (and you can take your drinks from the bar down to the lanes). 24 euros per hour per lane, and 1.80 for shoe rental.
(Bah! Made a quick call to the bowling alley: the clerk said that they are not open on June 17th, although their web site stated differently. Also called Talin Keilahalli. Same story, closed on weekends during the summertime.)
Back to the old drawing board.

Allright mothafuckas!
So, a) 17.6 is the date, yes?
b) who the fuck is down for this thing? I know I, Vigil and Morrgan are at least, and I assume Vasquez and sysq are as well. Also Kryptos you Gordon Ramsey impersonator you. AND SPITTER YOU BETTER SHOW OR I'LL MAKE YOU FEEL GUILTY FOR HALF A YEAR. But WHO ELSE. Plans need to be made! How drunk are we going to get, and when are we starting Serious Boozing? How long are people planning to stay. Do I need to plan for a stay in helsinki, or can I catch a late-ish train to Turku? AND SO ON!
SPEAK UP PEOPLE DAMMIT
