If anything's gonna be responsible for the downfall of this nation
The democracy is only as good as their voters, and since we see angry, sweaty conservatives trying to take matters into their hands, that's how the quality of political debate is going to look like. The history saw downfall of a few countries not so far from such point, we'll see if anything like that is going to happen.

He's ruined either way. That's the trend with these things. Hope I'm wrong there.

If I want to be technical about things, I'd say that the things I listed above won't be directly responsible for the downfall of the nation, rather a contributor, since these general attitudes will end up making a recovery from a real disaster that much more difficult.
We may very well be heading towards another Great Depression. Yeah, the job market is booming right now, and consumer confidence is at an all time high. We've also got $1.5 trillion in outstanding student loans, the average American is deeply in debt, wages are stagnant, and the wealth gap is particularly large. The current state of the economy is roughly in line with how the country looked on Jan. 1st, 1929. We thought ourselves an unstoppable engine of progress up til the moment we threw all the rods.
...and if we face something like another Great Depression in this political environment? Oh, it will not be pretty.

It's interesting to note that near the end of the session, Senator Flake (one of the swing votes), appeared to be emotionally manipulated into requesting a one week FBI investigation, after spending some time with the Dems outside.
Although the Republicans were successful at fending off the Democrat operational strategy with a successful vote, the Dems still have a glimmer of hope if Flake and perhaps another senator or two can be manipulated for the final vote on the Senate floor.

I just think that if we start picking up every little thing someone did / may not have done across their entire life time, and make that public knowledge, then we're all screwed. Just me thinking that?

He'll be about as ruined by this as Justice Thomas was by Anita Hill. If he doesn't get his SCOTUS nomination, which is highly unlikely, he goes back to his equally cushy, though not quite as prestigious position on the DC circuit. In a couple of years, today's drama will be a distant memory.

That is correct.

Well I hope so (assuming that he's truly innocent in all of it).
