A dangerously broad definition of "illegal enemy combatant" in the bill could subject legal residents of the United States, as well as foreign citizens living in their own countries, to summary arrest and indefinite detention with no hope of appeal. The president could give the power to apply this label to anyone he wanted.

We have a similarly frightening bill due to go through Parliament this autumn, the (http://www.saveparliament.org.uk/problem.html) Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill.

These people are using perceived external threats to push through profoundly illiberal measures that are stripping away centuries of democratic reform overnight. And the worst thing is that they might actually succeed.

And yes Outlooker, for once it isn't too extreme to say that this kind of legislation is derivative of Nazi Germany, because this is exactly what the Nazis did with the Ermächtigungsgesetz in 1933 to obtain sweeping powers through democratic means.
