Just opened a news site and... what the f*** ! Do they really intend to fly people on this?

http://www.andrews-space.com/thumb/phpThumb.php?src=../images/pages/clv_launchpad.jpgAfter they chose the new constellation program they published some crappy videos in the typical NASA style ("Hey look, we are NASA and we're the best in space industry" ). However, as I successfully passed my physics exam, I doubt the question the whole sticky thing can fly. And as I have some sources from NASA officials and a lot of these officials are pessimistic, too ;)
The new vehicle ( Ares 1 ) will be almost as tall as Saturn 5 that sent people to the moon, so it should not be called a stick, but a heavy lolly-pop :D Now what :) it seems that even the private space companies have better project than this crap...

Are you sure that's not just another payload hauler? I'm pretty sure they were looking at fully reusable "space plane" type things for people from here on out, especially after Rutan's business proved so many of these concepts viable.

What kind of heap of shit is that?
In which bit do the Astronauts live, and is it resusable or what? How much are these going to cost and how long is it before they actually get built and used?
Fuck it I'm going to Wikipedia.
edits - Wiki says it used to be called a Crew Launch Vehical, so no, I doubt it's any kind of hauler.

yes, it's just another payload hauler, but the worst my eyes have ever seen.

WOW, that's a pretty good question. They intend to fly in 2008 a first stage with an artificial second stage and artificial payload, just for the test and waste of money... They hope they'll make it till 2014, but I doubt that this will even fly vertically. Hope that the next administration will cancel that shit and use existing rockets that are cheaper. The whole thing is that all of the existing rockets use russian engines for a first stage and the government won't let a russian engine to fly american astronauts. That's it.

edit - scrub that, nevermind.
I heard (down the pub probably, I forget) that the Saturn V is still the safest and 'best' bit of hardware they ever made. It seems this is based on a similar design, maybe they're on to something?

Oh what fun. Another shitty "olol US/NASA is crap" thread from Bulgarian_Taffer. Put forth some technical or economic arguments based on, and referencing, facts next time.
Also, a non-manned test flight of a manned vehicle is "a waste of money"? What sort of idiot are you?

because, my dear, they'd better make a ground test of the dynamic and avionics rather than flying with an artificial second stage. It will be cheaper and easier. Oh, I forgot to tell you that the new segment of the first stage will be empty :P holy crap! visit the forum of NASA Spaceflight and you'll see that everybody says that these tests are stupid.

Can America interrogate prisoners in space without violating international treaties? Not like their held to the ICC anyway though. :p

And what about Antarctica?
