Official: No Hammers. No Pagans. No Keepers. - by thiefinthedark

That's particularly disappointing. Ugh. I wouldn't even mind if they'd only gotten rid of Keepers, or toned down pagans or whatever. Hammerites are the dominant religion, also, there's a church in the concept arts they've released (more a cathedral) so who has replaced them? Maybe they'll be like "no hammers but people worship the builder still" or something. Still annoying, Hammerites are pretty much core to Thief - they built the city after all.
...yet they say there will be references to the non-humanoid races? What the hell's going on? This is really confusing.

Ok Vae, tell me how this can be considered in any way "insulting". Disappointing? Sure. Insulting? No.
I've been wondering if the Hammers were considered a little too unique to be a minor faction. One thing that struck me looking back at thief 1 after first hearing this news months ago, was that LGS really spent a lot of time and effort introducing the three factions. EM might have decided that if you're going to have a somewhat unusual religion like the Hammers, you can't just plonk them in some corner somewhere and call it a day: you really need to spend a bit of time introducing them. And of course, do you really want to spend that time on a faction that isn't even in your story in the first place? Maybe not.
Still think they could have included them, though, even if they were tweaked slightly to make more easily recognizable religious values (like hard work, discipline, and strict punishments) more prominent, and then make the technological worship part of that. (In previous games it was the other way around.)
EDIT:
Thiefinthedark, my definition of hubris is the dictionary definition: extreme pride or arrogance. There are a million reasons they might have made these decisions. Extreme pride or arrogance isn't one.

No Eidos Montreal, that was the wrong move:nono: All this will do is just generate even more hatred and anger towards the reboot. Bringing some new factions in sounds great and all, but not even bothering to bring back the iconic factions that helped add to the original Thief games immensely will make your new vision of the series crumble before many player's eyes, if these new factions turn out to not even be remotely as interesting as the Hammers, Pagans, Mechanists and Keepers were.
Thing is, even if they were using the old canon, there still wouldn't be Keepers anymore. The entire faction dissolved the moment Garrett became the One True Keeper at the end of the trilogy.
I agree with Chade here. The Pagans, Hammerites, and Keepers were the focus of the original series, and had their stories concluded at the end of each of their respective games. While it'd be nice if we still had the Hammerites and Pagans lingering around in the background as a nod to continuity (and there very might be), I'd much rather them do something new.

What a shame...Just another aspect that disqualifies NuThief as a THIEF game...:tsktsk:
If they kept them in you'd be whining harder.

*sighs* Oh well, guess that's another element of the original games we can add to the list of features that have been unnecessarily replaced with something much less interesting or refined.
Listen to me, the time has come to realise that the new team is indeed *not* modeling the game after the classics. I was holding out hope that they were sitting in some dark room playing Ultima and laughing at how genius their new Thief was gonna be. Now I see, they havent the slightest clue what Ultima even is, and have not even played through Dark Project. Of course they dont have the talent or ability to craft a classic like LGS did. They simply arent LGS and arent privvy to the mystical shit. Sorry.

This insults the integrity of the THIEF Universe itself, and all who hold dear that everlasting virtual world...In official capacity, EM has acted derelictly as stewards...as they are responsible for the continuation of world and canon.

Yet, I do not whine at all, but simply recognize the unfortunate reality that is upon us...You need to understand the difference before making such idiotic comments.

So what would you rather them do? Retread old ground, or try something new? Do you want to go through yet another Hammerite cathedral? Do you want to them to redo Soulforge? What about The Shalebridge Cradle II? Is this all you want from Thief? More of the same?
They haven't said they've removed them entirely, they're just not playing a direct part in the new story.

This has to be some brilliant form of sabotage.

Vae, even if I agreed with you about this threatening the "integrity of the thief universe", insult != threaten.
