New religious faction? I honestly don't see why they bothered when they had a perfectly interesting, well established faction to work with in the first place. If the story goes the way of something like "new faction , backed by the Baron to help him consolidate power (or something) drives out Hammerites, one of the causes of strife in the City." Ok, I'll swing that if they do it well, maybe.
Someone in an earlier thread mentioned a great story idea in which the Hammerites are still around but exist only in small, hidden groups trying to claw their way back up to the top as they're supplanted by another faction, or something. To me that's a great way of going about it, if they insist on getting rid of the Hammers.
Now that sounds interesting.

We could only wish. Unfortunately, that story idea would most likely prove far too complex and intricate for the NuFans of NuThief. An attention span would be required, also.

Really? Slighting fans that don't exist yet? Cool yo jets sista.
I kind of get why they are doing this. They get to make a story that is all their own whilst having an awesome solid history to the City that actually exists in other games (rather than just being made up on the spot) and which they could reference in really cool and subtle ways that only existing fans would really get.
In theory.
But I seriously doubt it'll work because try as they might I don't think they really get what Thief is about, and if the awful writing from the trailers is anything to go by the writing team need to be replaced.

Indeed they do.

That was the most positive interpretation I could dream up after the earliest reports that the old factions wouldn't be in the game. It was always a long shot, and their latest statements make me think it can basically be ruled out. We know that there will be things links from what we see in the game to the old fiction, and that's almost certainly as far as it goes.
For what it's worth, I stated in the same post that my minimum standard for accepting their story as canon would be 1) it has the right spirit, and 2) there was a plausible story leading from the way things were to the way things are now. By now I'm satisfied that they've done (2)*, so that leaves me wondering about (1). At this stage I'm hesitantly hopefull. The worst thing I've seen so far is the E3 cinematic trailer, but off the top of my head everything else I've seen has been decent.
* LATE EDIT: completely changed wording to avoid implying that EM have objectively confirmed there is a plausible story leading from the old fiction to the new fiction.

WOW! Everything I have seen so far of this new game has been CRAP, not making me want to play it at all.

They don't understand us, Webe. They're just a bunch of sell outs.

Webe: guards changing patrol routes after spotting suspicious activity is bad? Pickpocketing delay is bad? Looking through keyholes is bad? I don't think you literally mean "everything".
I don't feel like spending time doing an exhaustive list of things I find positive or potentially positive, but maybe it would be worth making a thread sometime later to see what things other people think will or might turn out to be good.

This was my experience with Thief 3. It was a mixture of upgrades and downgrades for me, from the previous games.

What were the upgrades?
