The idea of turning the story of Thief into politics and tyranny, poor vs rich, is something we have seen a million times in every faucet of fiction and non fiction...
Thankfully defeating a mystical demon, working on the downfall of a lunatic who wants to destroy the earth and unravelling a secret prophecy is far less mainstream.

Eh, I'm gonna admit, this is kinda a deal breaker, at least for me. It seems like they're taking all the best stuff out and replacing it with ??????? I don't know, I'll probably just end up getting it in a steam sale or something.

I thought the whole point of resurrecting Thief, rather than starting a new series, was so they could benefit from using the existing IP. And yet, as far as I know, we have the City Watch, which I don't think is a copyrighted name since there's a CW in the Discworld books, and Garrett in name only. Is that all Thief '4' has to offer us that the Dark Mod doesn't? If so, it's not much.

Thief was never strong in the story department. It only worked (and I'm being generous here) because they kept it minimal and because the worldbuilding was so good.

From a (kind of cynical) marketing perspective, what they have is the branding of the title itself, like new Coke. They own the name so can do anything with it that doesn't make people openly revolt, so why not get the value of the branding while they're at it.
Dark Mod still has Builders and Mechanist-like Inventors, so ironically if anything it's a little closer to the original lore, at least on those points (though of course they're intentionally not the same either, and we have multiple protagonists so far). But its job was just to make FMs anyway, and many T2 FMs had already gone a bit independent already (I mean just using a generic thief or like Calendra's alt-Garrett).

Plus, we have a Baron, a river running through The City, Basso, the Crippled Burrick Pub, the classical equipment... that is more than Garrett and the City Watch.

It wasn't back in the day when the games were made. I'm not saying repeat the same formulas, but come up with something unique... not politics.

Wow, stop the presses... those touches sure are enough to convince me they aren't taking the Thief franchise over a cliff. I mean, it's not like even with those same elements, they arent changing anything else about them... or anything. Jenivere the bird comes to mind... admittedly I don't know yet for sure, but it seems evident. We will be getting lip service at the most... references they think will make us happy. References do not alter the crappy choices and changes that are being made.

I still don't get why they had to be removed, there was plenty of room for the Baron (reserved since game one), his Watch (yes, this one too) and the dissendents called Ravens. What irks me the most is how they got rid of the iconic hammer in any shape or form and replace it with some generetic church faction they don't even bother naming until now.
Why is EM able to acknowledge even the crappy Invisible War in Human Revolution but is absolutely unwilling to do the same for Thief? According to the recent (
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/18/thief-producer-we-have-a-single-shot) joystiq interview they only have one chance to revive Thief so why are they closing their eyes before the strengths of the series and what made it so unique?

Because they clearly DONT KNOW what Dark Project even is! LOLOLOLOLOL
They never even played Dark Project!!! They just thought, hey, lets make some money!! We'll take this crappy old Thief game and bring it back and try to cash in on the long forgotten name!!! Mwwahahahahaaaaaa!!!!!!! This gets better by the second.
Dark Project is a cursed game, and any new team should think long and hard before unraveling its funeral cloths.

Woah, have they said that they'll add in a new religious faction? Do you have a source?
