Raptorll: Are the old non-City Watch factions going to return--such as the Pagans, Hammerites, and Keepers--if only to give life to The City?Because it's a reinvention, we are not going back to the old factions. We want new factions. The last story didn't give us a lot of options. We wanted to take a step back and make sure we have everything right for a new, fresh experience within this universe. There may be some references back to keep the following happy, but it will be all new groups.
The two new factions are the Baron and he has The Watch. We also have a dissident group called the Raven. There is a political conflict that Garrett finds himself in the middle of. There will be characters associated with the group that will reveal themselves within the game.
So. :nono:

What a shame...Just another aspect that disqualifies NuThief as a THIEF game...:tsktsk:

Legit ridiculous.
No Hammers? What?
There are Keeper statutes in some of the screenshots!

I am assuming that is due to this line:

Basically everything from the original games has become just decoration. Burricks are only seen mounted to walls, "Taffer" will not be used in place of the F-word, and the old factions will just be nodded at in favor of whatever EM has pulled out of their fan-fiction dark hole.
Read the entire QA, the hubris is just depressing. :tsktsk:

We've also seen a Hammer statue, I believe.
This is the most straightforward statement so far of something we pretty much already knew. There are references and nods to the previous factions, but they're not actually present in the city.
I'm very supportive of the decision to base their story around different factions, so I'm perfectly happy to see the old factions be relegated to minor roles in the city this time around. I was hoping you would see the factions in some minor capacity, though. It's difficult to imagine the city without a Hammer church anywhere at all.
EDIT:
thiefinthedark, I think labeling their decisions as "hubris" is pretty weird. They're making the game: that puts them in a position where these sort of decisions crop up. Burrick heads mounted on walls is no worse then thief 2 or thief 3. Taffer is supposedly used alongside other curses. The Baron is canon, and these other factions are no more fan-fiction then the mechanists were.

No Eidos Montreal, that was the wrong move:nono: All this will do is just generate even more hatred and anger towards the reboot. Bringing some new factions in sounds great and all, but not even bothering to bring back the iconic factions that helped add to the original Thief games immensely will make your new vision of the series crumble before many player's eyes, if these new factions turn out to not even be remotely as interesting as the Hammers, Pagans, Mechanists and Keepers were.
*sighs* Oh well, guess that's another element of the original games we can add to the list of features that have been unnecessarily replaced with something much less interesting or refined. But at least it will make it all the more easier in a few years time, when we can all just pretend that this reboot never happened and just go on, enjoying what we like about Thief with none of the downsides of modern gaming.

In fact, how could it be the "The City" without Hammerite churches present?...Answer: It can't.
...and that's the point. This isn't "The City" at all...it's an insulting misrepresentation of it...NuCity.

Interesting choice by them - I mean, using the existing factions would have been so much easier. Now we have a Thief reboot without Hammerites, Keepers, Pagans, Mechanists, Stephen Russell, Burricks, Benny, Undead, or any kind of magic. What do we have? Garrett (in name only), Basso, Jenivere, some arrows, and...The City Watch? Not much of a reboot. They should have just started a whole new IP.

This is essentially just fan fiction with money behind it...and not to be considered THIEF canon, at all.

In fact, they state in the Q&A that they've even renamed all the city quarters, its not even the same city...
Chade: You don't consider taking an established IP, throwing out as much as you can without it ceasing to be that IP, and replacing it with your own fiction (which is implied to be superior for 'modern gamers'), to be hubris? We evidently have different interpretations of the term.
This game has less tie to the series than the Dark Mod at this point. It's a blooming disgrace.
