I just think that there's a lot of companies out there that make games specifically to showcase their engines
Oh? Besides id and Epic, who?

I know Serious Sam started it's life as an engine demo.

So did Far Cry.

I'm not sure if I wouldn't prefer this type of cartoony look for characters over the uncanny valley monstrosities that the senior character artist for DX3 does...
The aircraft carrier one doesn't look that bad; I did get a laugh at
NWS (

NWS, though.
Also, I doubt the guy has permission to use Peter Weller's likeness like that. With the way things are going these days, I'm surprised someone hasn't sued him yet. :p

Lol, the internet connection I'm using is pretty slow, so when that image started loading downwards, I was like "Hm, I wonder if he is going to go all the wa - Yep." :laff:
As for the aircraft carrier guy, it probably only looks better because you can't see most of his face anyway.
The_Raven on 26/8/2008 at 02:28
Yeah, I did realize that was most likely the case.
Still, as far as uncanny valley abortions go, these really aren't that bad.
ZymeAddict on 26/8/2008 at 02:31
Yeah, you're right. The only one I really didn't like was the second one, and that was probably because the lady was fugly regardless.

Agreed. Regardless though, that'll probably change for better or worse if they were to be animated.

Dude, at least put a NSFW next to the link.

I could not possibly care less if DX3 doesn't use the latest, greatest, buzzword-compliant graphics engine, and I'm surely not alone in this. Valve and Blizzard built their empires on the realization that high-quality art direction is more important to gamers than bleeding-edge rendering tech.
Again, this is an area where IW fell flat on its face. Its engine required a monster rig to run smoothly, but the game itself looked like ass.
When you're making a niche game like DX, you want the widest possible range of systems to be able to play it.
