ok long story short! had thief gold played for a few years left off for a few more, came back to it again and found my disc had cracked! so like any one else I got another copy through ebay and it works fine have the direct3d patch etc and have gotten to the escape lv with no problems at all BUT almost every other time I save and then reload it will crash out and not reload it! I've only found a few places that will work regardless! never had this problem before.
The only differences now as to when I ran tg before is that I'm running sp3 and have changed cards from a nvidia 5900 to a 7600 would that make any difference at all? so far it all seems to be only on the escape lv, I just though it was a really odd problem and wondered what other people thought on this.

I have this problem when play I TG on my newer computer. To prevent this, I simply start a new game before reloading. It seems to work, though I have no idea why.
(P.S. I'm running a 7600 as well)

Yes, changing from a 5900 to a 7600 does make a difference. You might want to try (
http://timeslip.chorrol.com/ddfix.html) ddfix. :)
Edit: Oops, do you mean the ddraw fix? I noticed you said direct3d, but ddfix is actually direct draw.

aye I'm using the direct3dfix fix found under the thief series faq have been using it for years and never had a problem before, just finished escape and it seems to be confined to just that mission as saves before and after work with zero trouble. Just seemed odd to me but hey I was never a fan of escape anyway, did my head in trying to get the first few rat guards to drop over without much fuss :cheeky:
thanks for letting me know that changin to a 7600 could cause a problem is it worth me staying with the old direct fix or trying that other one?

I think we're talking about two different things.
Are you referring to this ?

Help! I only get a black screen or Direct 3D Device does not accurately report texture memory usage.
Please Note:
If you are using an nVidia card with drivers in the 9x.xx range then the fixes listed below will not work. At present the only solution is to downgrade your drivers to versions in the 8x.xx range or below.
An error message that pops up when starting a level in Thief and Thief 2. You may not get an error message, you may see only a black screen. It primarily occurs on Nvidia Graphics cards running driver versions 5x.xx and above although there are several reports of it occuring on ATI 9xxx cards using new drivers.
If you are running Thief 2 you should remove the semicolon (;) from the line ;safe_texture_manager in the file user.cfg which you should open with Notepad.
If you are running Thief 1 you should download one of the patches linked below that corresponds to your version and overwrite the installed Thief EXE with the one from the ZIP file.
Thief: The Dark Project v1.14 Direct3D Texture Error Fix.
Thief: The Dark Project v1.33 Direct3D Texture Error Fix.
Thief: Gold Direct3D Texture Error Fix.
Hmm, that's pretty weird that it would only happen to Escape! and crash when loading a save... :weird:

yep that's the one I'm using! and yes I thought the same as you seems the only "safe" save I have is at the first set of stairs near the start just down the right hand side in front of the torch! that spot I can reload with no problems! any where else and it's most likely a crash and I need to reload that save and then load the other in order for it to work! weird or what?? been onto the following mission and been able to save and reload anywhere as per all other missions but that one has just gone odd! ran a avg scan early today and have no virus spyware etc! no other changes since I played about a year back other than the new card and sp3 which I can't see could make much difference! ah well at least it's small problem.

Yeah, I can't think of anything to fix that, sorry. The only suggestion I have is to try ddfix, as I posted before. We're talking about two seperate fixes.
ddfix is a direct draw fix that redirects broken directx function calls in thief and fixes the fog in thief 2 for users with newer graphics cards (like 6 series and up), and so on and so forth. Go here if you want to try it out: (
