Easier said than done.
-Since I let my parents take some money from my 3000 US$ savings to keep our shelter, I'm left with a third of that original amount. That's not going to buy me a PC with my desired specs last time I checked.
-Said parents wouldn't let me get a new PC anyway, even if I DID have the money. They plan to start looking into it this summer, which is why I need some way to pass the time. An Athlon XP 1800+, 512 MB of DDR-266, and a 9600 XT probably won't cut it for Oblivion, despite the fact that I've preordered the game already.

It's been mentioned time and again that a 9800Pro is what the devs used while making and testing the game. I expect you'll be able to play it with alot of the pretty turned up at 1024x768 using that card.
Your CPU will probably have to be a bit beefy though, what with the radiant AI and physics effects it's tossing around.

I'm actually beginning to doubt this. Apparently there have been a lot of frame rate problems - problems which have been sorted out, but I still wonder if a 9800pro will be enough anymore.

I'm assuming that Oblivion is aimed at the Gefore6800 crowd of cards for optimal performance, so considering a 9800Pro is just a generation behind it'll probably run it fairly well.

The official system requirements have been released and can be found in the (
http://www.elderscrolls.com/games/oblivion_faq.htm) Oblivion FAQ. So you can all stop speculating now. ;)
Recommended:
* 3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 1 GB System RAM
* ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card
Minimum System Requirements:
* Windows XP
* 512MB System RAM
* 2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 128MB Direct3D compatible video card and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
* 8x DVD-ROM drive
* 4.6 GB free hard disk space
* DirectX 9.0c (included)
* DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
* Keyboard, Mouse
With an Athlon64 3000+, 1 GiB of RAM and an ATI X700 card I should be fine (phew!)...
Except for the Windows XP requirement -- I still have Windows 2000.

Just barely meeting the minimum, as with BF2. Ugh. *insert random bitching about how I wish I had a better PC*
Would an upgrade to an AXP 2400+ or 2600+ provide a reasonable performance gain over an AXP 1800+? (266 MHz FSB models here; the old nForce mobo won't permit anything faster to run at full speed.)

Ok i saw on the official website that the minimum processor requirement was 2.0 ghz pentium 4. My processor is a 1.8 ghz amd athlon will mine work good enough. or if not will overclocking it only that much be any problem with the 5 fans in my pc?
PS im scared i hope it will run. :tsktsk:
RyushiBlade on 3/2/2006 at 05:30
Too bad my super-awesome card doesn't support Shader Model 3.0.
... Damn it.

What's the rating? An AXP 1800+ is clocked at around 1.5 GHz, so you should be over that hump in comparison to the 2 GHz P4.
Of course, the sad part is that our systems will probably be crushed with lots of CPU-intensive instructions like AI and physics at the minimum req level...hell, I can't run CS:S with any more than 6-8 bots before the FPS drops to slideshow levels.
