Ok this is kinda funny but dont laugh. when i said i had a budget of 500 dollars i meant FOR THE WHOLE COMPUTER. I cant spend 400 bucks on a graphics card my plans were. Something like a 5500 or higher most likely higher maybe a 6600 or 7something. An amd processor and definantly 512 minimum ram. This can easily fit into500 dollars on newegg.com. its an awsome site might want to check it out. Poeple speak of using a 5500 to run games like fear frequently. If anyone ever finds out the official requirements please post them here.

For $500 you might want to consider an Xbox... It'll run it five times better than any $500 computer.

Mrrrh... is this guy totally sure? I think that 6600GT is about to reach the mainstream -> low-end border soon. I plan to buy this card soon with my new computer (AMD64 3000+, 1GB RAM) and I am quite sure that in a year it will be a budget iron, panting and sweating when I'll try to set the effects up in ultimate 3D games of 2006/7.
Bad thing for hires textures is that it has 128MB of videomemory. Some cards solve this by storing textures in system RAM. I don't know whether 6600 GT can do this.
Another bad thing is 128bit memory interface, but this doesn't ache me much, since, as I understand, it's really good only for high antialiasing, without which I can live quite well.

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ ClawHammer 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor - OEM
I looked around and within minutes found this for $325 in a combo pack with a choice of a motherboard harddrive or flashdrive. Is it any good i just pasted it from the website.

Hah. Mods.
If Oblivion is as buggy as Morrorun is, I'm going to enjoy having a console to do anything I damn well please.
Anyway, graphic cards are useless when you achieve the level of play I have pioneered and dominated. I defeated Morrowind without a monitor or speakers. Eat your heart out helen keller.

It should be all right considering your budget. It out performs the Radeon 9800 XT by leaps and bounds. If the 'rumors' are true, and the 9800 card is used in some dev machines, then the Radeon x800 should be fine. Perhaps not crystal clear, high-res graphics, but good nonetheless.

If you can afford it, go for a dual core processor, or any other multi-threaded processor. I'd recommend AMD over Intel for desktop pcs and Intel over AMD for laptops and mobile pcs.
Oblivion has been developed to use more than one core at the same time if available because of the sheer processing power that will be needed to run it. This is going to be true for most other future games that are built for Xbox 360 as well - this is because the Xbox 360 has 3 CPU Cores and developers are now taking that technology to their games.
I'm due for a new pc for the new year which I am building with Oblivion in mind and personally, I'll be getting at least a Athlon 64 Dual Core 4000+ and 2 gig memory.
Don't bother with Sli motherboards, you'll be paying for an extra board feature that is over-kill and a power hog. The technology is great, but two cards are too expensive and you'll always be able to get great graphics acelleration from a single card on PCI-x16 if you keep your card up to date.

The 6600 GT PCI-x16 should run Oblivion comfortably. This is the card I have in my current system and they are becomming very affordable. As described in my earlier post, your CPU may be more important in a game like Oblivion.
Still, I might be upgrading to a 6800 ultra but going for that 7800 is a little too much right now.

I have an Intel for my desktop and an AMD for my Laptop. Now I'm depressed. :erg:
