Bit quiet in here...
*cough*
Anyway, I was somewhat disappointed with the map that came with Oblivion, especially considering the detailed lovely that came with Morrowind, so I set about doing my own.
Properly. Or as best as I could manage given my limited cartographic skills. The results have been gathering dust for about a year or so now, but thanks to pestering, I figured it was time to polish the thing off.
What I'd like from you chaps/chapesses is if you could spend a minute or two perusing the photos of it and point out anything I've missed. I aimed to put in all features that are marked on your in-game map and a few important ones that aren't (Stone circles, shrines, lakes/rivers etc). I know I'm mising Fort Ash, but is there anything else I'm overlooking?
Secondly, as you can see, the digital camera I have is not really awesome enough to upload said map onto my PC where I'd like to do some tweaking/smudge removal in PSP and my A4 scanner is woefully undersized (Map is the same size as the paper one you get with the game). Can anyone recommend/suggest a way I can digitize my paper copy?

Lawks. Looking at it in extreeeeme closeup really highlights the screw ups that scream for PSP editing. :(
BTW the photos are blown up somewhat. If you scale them down to ~30% then that's life-size.

Not sure how much time you spent doing that, but man it must have been tedious.
Well I've compared your map to the in-game one and to an enhanced version of it and yours seems to be pretty accurate. It's kind of hard to follow without names and a lot of things that are close to each other tend to blend at first one with the other and require a couple more looks to understand what they are and how they are positioned. But those are just a minor enervation since this is a map and it should require attention when viewing.
I was wondering, are you going to add names to the locations? Make it more artistic with gray shades here and there? (would work in making the water different than the roads which can be considered rivers or vice-versa) Try to highlight the various locations so they stand out and don't blend with each other?
Cool map. :D

I've been thinking on-and-off about what detail I should or shouldn't add. I'm concerned that over doing it would spoil the map with over crowding. For the water I was thinking about adding ripples at the water's edge and for the roads, maybe close packed dots for a sort of cobble effect.
As far as naming goes, I've put in all the names that are on the orginal paper map and I'm not sure there's room enough to put many more in. The map that came withMorrowind had the Daedric shrine names on it in Deadric, so perhaps if I could find a copy of the Ayleid alphabet I could label the ruins. But again, it's a question of space. I also considered marking which Ayleid ruins held the statues, where the grand welkynd stone was etc with little icons and perhaps having a key in the bottom corner explaining what was what.
As for artsy stuff, that's something I'd liike to try out in PSP before trying anything on my paper copy. Having spent the best part of a month on it, I'd rather not ruin it now. :o

I'm a sucker for maps; hand drawn or otherwise. Nice job on this and don't go mucking it up with more than you feel it needs. You're right to keep it 'clean'. Although, maybe a little notation by Leyawiin for ships: Warning- City does not move out of way so stick it.:cheeky:
