It's very sad.
Jim Baen fostered many great careers and chose to pursue publishing in ways that were occasionally controversial (the establishment of the Baen Free Library, for one), but he always pursued his convictions---which you can't say about some publishers with their huge boards and business concerns outside of publishing. He took personal interest in every book and knew every author. There will be a big hole in the SF universe without him.

Baen Publications (Baen Books) have been a constant source of reading for me. Not too crazy about all the Drake writings, but many other authors published by Baen have been well worth reading.
Let us hope his legacy is carried on by his inheiritors.
