I'd say the PC has the high ground on First Person games because of obvious reasons (the mouse). I mean, most first person games on consoles either suck, or are ports of games that were done much better on PC.
The games that were good (Halo... umm... Halo 2) were really only standout BECAUSE they were on a console, and thier peer group was somewhat lacking.
As for judging consoles, I think the only thing you can judge them on is games. The power means nothing in a vacuum. The XBox straight up outperforms the PS2. There are numbers and facts and such. However the PS2 does way better - I would say - because of its superior library of games.
Likewise everyone seems to rag pretty harsh on the Gamecube. But it's not actually that inferior a system, powerwise. Sure it looks kinda goofy and the controller isn't the best, but it can crank out a solid game. The thing is that there just aren't many games for it. It's not a solid investment because what are you gonna use it for?
I'd say the only real value of horsepower in a system is what developers are able to do with it. And in some cases this can screw you. The whole next-generation budget inflation I think is evidence of this, as well as the decline of the PCs. Used to be PCs were a great gaming machine because everyone already had one. And it cost far less for game specific components than to buy one of them fancy consoles. But nowadays to keep up you have to pour tons of money into game specific components. Poor old PC... THE RISE OF CONSOLES IS MARGINALIZING MY INVESTMENT!
Seriously though folks, some things are good for some things.

You can't even use its games as coasters >.<
The point I was trying to make was that judging by power is the only way to 'decide on the superior console.' Any other way is pointless because it's all subjective. People will like whatever games they like on whatever platform they like. Then they'll fight a pointless fight to prove that their console is better because of the games they play.
Hell, if that's the case, the best console of them all is the Dreamcast. I loved it so much, I bought it twice (first one busted after leaving it on for two weeks straight.) I love very nearly every game I've ever bought for it - Aside from a few cheap ones I got after they discontinued the system, I could pick any DC game at random and be happy playing it. That is what I call customer satisfaction.
And for what it's worth, if you have the spare change, get a Dreamcast and buy Seaman. Very nice game, heh. Very... Strange.

Personally, it's my favorite among the 3. I found the most enjoyable games on GC (Metroid Primes, Zelda(s), Resident Evil 4...). But I have to admit that each console has specific excellent games. I think the most unexploited potential is the PS2, with has a very interesting architecture regarding Special Effects and such, but with the most sucky sport games (I HATE sport games, except futuristic race games like F-Zero or WipeOut). I didn't have an occasion to play any FF though.

Yeah, the Dreamcast was hell of a console. The Saturn was excellent too, too bad it didn't have any success (radiant silvergun anyone ?).
Anyway, I'm very off topic here. So, back to the original subject :
Oblivion will most certainly rock !
(Off topic again : have you guys seen the teaser, the screenshots and the info for Gothic 3 ? If not, (
http://www.gothic3.de) Gothic 3. This and Oblivion... mmh sweet !)

SOUL CALIBUR 2!
Then you can play as Link...yea! :cheeky: ;)
No...honestly. If I see one cheap enough I'll grab it for just that reason...no...seriously...

@RyushiBlade: I probably do want to play that game with you, but I don't have the time. I've said my piece, and that's that...oh, BTW N64 has four controller ports--OMG!
...
and you can use PS1 memory cards with PS1 games in the PS2...as a matter-of-fact, they're the only memory cards you CAN use with PS1 games in the PS2, since the new and improved PS2 memory cards aren't compatible with the format of the older files.

Erm. Yes. That's what I was getting at. Yes.

Really? Last time I tried, my PS2 exploded. I was trying to load FFVIII.

Striker's too cool to mind too much about off topicness. Should see some of the things Tuco has said...
Gothic 3 looks remarkably similar to Oblivion. The graphics are stunning (though I think Oblivion may be slightly better, but that could be biased) and it looks to be a great game. I've never played Gothic 1 or 2, so I'm wondering if I should try out atleast the second? Anyone? I heard good and bad things about the game, but ultimately that they could have done so much more. Then again, Morrowind was a lot like that too.

Yeah I think you should really give Gothic 2 a try. It's nice but of course not as beautiful as Morrowind, and the controls are a little... difficult. Finally, it's a very hard RPG made by and for RPG fans and the story is less original than Morrowind.
But except from that, it's great, and bigger than Morrowind.

Greatest console ever*. So many DC-only titles are among my favorite games of all time it's ridiculous.
*Actually that's hyperbole, I'd probably rank it just above the Xbox and below the 2600.

well at least it was a subjective feeling :p
I felt i had more to explore in Gothic 2, but emptier (does this word really exist in english ?)
Renzatic on 11/5/2005 at 23:53
I always thought Gothic 2 felt more alive and had a better sense of place than Morrowind had, it's the main reason why I've always preferred it over MW.
