... folks like Sharpton or Jackson while they rake in tons of money, driving fancy cars to and from their country club mansions.
:laff: Their problem is that they like to bring issues of inequality up (some valid), but in the end it rarely leads to any positive, lasting changes in
our community. If somebody is going to be a bigot, then so be it. Calling them out on it may embarrass them (or not). But this is just a temporary high-five. At the end of the day, too many of us are not moving forward to create true wealth or knowledge.
Quote:
Even if this is simply fallout from the past then it's still not the fault of white America any longer IMO.
Whites started it. We continue it with self doubt and inaction. However, those of us that DO achieve and DO move forward may still face discrimination and butt their heads against a system fortified with white entitlement. Only the truly remarkable sail above these barriers (Tiger Woods). But how many of us can really be superstars. There must continue to be fairness for those of us who are simply competent or "pretty good".
There is no cabal to keep the black man down; only the reality that blacks do not own any significant portion of the wealth or influence in this country. As such, we are not taken seriously and continually underestimated.

What do you think has to happen for change to take place,
Electing Obama is a start. It sounds corny but I truly believe that if young black youth can see one of their own as the defacto leader of the free world -- it will help to remove these shackles of mental slavery. Here is Barack Obama -- a black man, taking care of business and being shown respect by all these dudes for what's in his HEAD. That is POWER.
But the long term solutions are more complicated. Too much to break down in one message. But the bottom line for me is: Blacks need to create their own wealth.
We need to have our own brain trusts and talents come together to create the big companies that can compete in the marketplace. From this comes banks, small business, jobs, opportunity.
The problem now is that there is black talent out there in technology, medicine, law, education, etc. But its all fractured and not enough of it to really have a critical mass to make something permanent. Once we "make it" -- a lot of us are content just remaining comfortable and middle class. Very few really stretch out and take the risks that can create the huge pools of wealth that white folks have.
But it all starts with education. This doesn't mean everybody has to go to college but it DOES mean that you need the discipline and focus to learn some skill that others will pay you for. This gets you out of the ghetto, gets you that first home loan, gets your kids going to a GOOD school, etc...

Nothing to dissagree with there as that mostly all seems perfectly sound.
As an aside:
I don't care for Obama politically, and I won't be voting for him. I couldn't possibly bring myself to voting for McCain either though which will aid him somewhat in the numbers game.
That said, if Obama's election results to some sort of awakening like you've mentioned then he will have at least accomplished something that we could all be happy about, regardless of how high our taxes get....

Do you make a ton of money? To my knowledge (and correct me if I'm wrong), but I've not heard anything about raising taxes for working class/middle class people. Maybe you are neither, but I think the "raising taxes" is just a talking point that republicans throw out there constantly to disenfranchise ignorant southerners towards the democrats.

We all, wallets big or small will pay for "free health care" and whatever other social spending increases come our way.
-And even if the taxes were raised exponentially only for the wealthy (again) then the cost would be passed down in the form of price raises for both goods and business services.
Obviously one's political views have a lot to do with how we percieve these things, and a lot of the promises being made are deep in new territory. In the end this is all speculation, and only time will tell us for sure how things will eventually pan out.

The majority of the costs (at least as planned) come from repealing the Bush tax cuts. Combine that with all the money not spent in Iraq when we get the fuck out and you've got a pretty decent surplus compared to now. Oversimplification I know but Both Hillary and Obama's plans pretty much revolved around repealing the tax cut (which us non-rich people got basically shit from). Once you factor in how much in general we spend on healthcare with the new system, we should be better off. Healtcare as it is now is bleeding people dry and it doesn't work.

But many, many more are still afraid of a powerful, independent black man speaking his mind as their leader.
They are wrong, they are dying off, and there is no need to pander to them.
If they're afraid of him now, they aren't voting for him anyways, whether or not he mentions that he likes Jay-Z.
