He had a life before the White House, you know...
That really doesn't help his case.
It was mostly as a state senator (1997-2004) -- which does things like renovate local parks and old streets and there must be 10,000s of them out there -- and just 3 years as a freshman US Senator (2005-2008, he just did half a term) where he could only get so much done, especially compared with, say, 90% of the rest of the Senate which had seniority over him (one of the most important things he did was just not being around during the Iraq vote).
Hanging it on past accomplisments just doesn't wash. It just makes sense as a prospective thing trying to pressure him into doing what he's promised (or suggested; do they even care what he's really promised, or just what he "stands for" as a symbol and what he "should have" promised?) ... which is all still fair game, I think; that's politics. It's a little dodgy just in the sense that any country isn't going to be very comfortable with people of other countries putting political pressure on their head of state to do things, or have that appearance, and the President doesn't want to look too "compliant".

This is the best commentary so far on the whole thing. It gave me a little more context and now I'm of the opinion that yes, he did deserve the prize, based on it's history and intent.

Meh. Ultimately, that piece seems to come down to "Yes, Obama did get the Nobel Peace Prize for electoral promises and for not being G. W. Bush, but it's okay, 'cause many other laureates have gotten it for just as little or even less." Which is fair enough, I suppose, but it only seems to serve to make the NPP even less noteworthy.
And, again, this isn't a dig at Obama. Good for him, I hear the medal thingie also comes with a little loose change.

Fair enough. For the record I don't actually know his history and I was just saying maybe the last 8 months weren't what it's all about. :)

Don't get the wrong idea, I think awarding the NPP to Obama is from a little way out of left-field, but you did forget to mention that he put together a package that kept Sarah Palin from becoming the most powerful man in the world. And that not so very long ago the US nationalism was a (arguably the most) significant, ever looming and sinister threat to world peace...

On that point, all I have to say is that a retarded chimpanzee could have beaten the McCain/Palin ticket.

While the Democrats most def. had an advantage, I wouldn't go so far as "retarded chimpanzee" -Obama beat McCain by 7.2% points. Impressive in our modern polarized society? Yes. A landslide? No. If only 4% of voters had switched parties they would have won (unless my math is completely fucked, which is entirely possible).
CCCToad on 11/10/2009 at 20:44
sheesh, why do you have to interfere with my ranting about how unattractive the idea of voting for McCain and Palin was?
The man had about as much personality as a beige coffee mug.
In all honesty, I think that the last few elections have had pretty shitty candidates, but people view them through rose colored goggles because of party affiliation. The fact that his victory wasn't a landslide doesn't mean much, as changing electoral demographics have made it difficult for a true landslide victory to take place. And no, I don't think Bush's 2004 victory constituted a true landslide either.
Just to tie this into the topic at hand, its a pretty sad commentary on our political state when simply not being Bush is enough to get a Nobel prize. Jon Stewart agrees with me, which means any argument to the contrary is invalid

We
know a retarded chimpanzee can beat McCain. Bush beat him in the 2000 primary. ;)

Yeah but then we shifty Euros only give the prize to important decision makers secretly expanding our influence on sovereign world leaders. Do you qualify? What important decisions have you made today?
