It's this kind of ignorant paranoia that defines what's wrong with conservativism/republicanism/rightwingism in America today. The left doesn't nearly engage in this kind of shit on anything approaching the same scale. There was no hysterical left-wing noise machine braying about Bush's "failure" in procuring the NYC Olympics in 2012.
To be fair, nobody cared what Bush did at that point and it's not like there was much of a big news blowout about it. But to say that the left doesn't reach the same levels of shrill idiocy is ignorant at best and downright delusional at worst. The day after the 2008 elections I saw people burning McCain in effigy; a bunch of people on campus accosted the members of the student Republican group to gloat, often waiting for them outside of class to jump them; and
I was nearly beaten up because I was wearing a
red shirt and red is the colour of Republicans- nevermind that red and black are my
school's colours. I've spent a lot of time around liberals over the last 8 years and I've seen some real douchebaggery that goes far beyond simple lambasting of Obama over the Olympics. I'm not saying all liberals like that, just like it's intellectually dishonest to claim all conservatives are like that- and most of my liberal friends aren't like that- but that didn't, and doesn't, stop other people from treating politics like a holy war.

'Left-wing noise machine' != individual leftist radicals.

Granted. But collectively it gets pretty damn deafening. I realize that by not agreeing in lockstep with RBJ I'm leaving myself open to evisceration but some things bear pointing out.

waaaaa i posted on the internet and no one has been mean to me about it yet but someone might be mean to me about it latterrrrr

Congratulations, that's not what I was saying at all! :thumb:
And you well know it's not like RBJ is any less predictable than anyone else on TTLG.

Doesn't matter, saying "I realize that by not agreeing in lockstep with X I'm leaving myself open to evisceration" before anyone says boo is a surefire way to show yourself to be a navel-gazing weenie, regardless of how "unpredictable" X is. Weak sauce yo. If you think you've got a valid argument make it in reply to whatever he actually says.

Fair point. I suppose there's no value in pointing out the open hostility towards certain opinions that exists in CommChat because everyone knows it's there (unless you're patently oblivious to it, like Thief13x.)

dumb ones :D (I kid because I love!)
The thing is we occasionally manage to have sensible discussions around here, even about "certain opinions" but it never happens when someone preemptively suggests that the other party is going to be unreasonable about it. And I say this as someone who's been on the "wrong" side more than once around here.
