Life sentences are economically infeasible. If the person is going to die in jail, just bump them off and save the money it would take keeping them alive.
I read somewhere, not sure if it's still true, that it's cheaper to keep somebody in jail for life due to all the court fees involved in the death sentence or something (I suppose not if they just accept the penalty, don't really know)

Getting back on topic though, I believe Obama is adopting this position out of political expediency.
Clever of him to set it up three years ago, then!
He has young daughters. I would expect anyone with young kids to take this position, no matter how liberal they otherwise are.

Which only supports my thesis that people who get children lose half their braincells to them.

The defendant (who looks to weigh about 300 pounds) fucked his 8 year old stepdaughter so hard she had internal injuries that required extensive emergency surgery.
I would expect most people without kids to take this position too, once they realize what child rape actually involves.

Surely if he's at all reasonable and legally trained he'd know that if a position is untenable, it's untenable no matter how angry a given crime might make people. "Everyone with kids would feel the same" is like saying everyone with kids shouldn't be allowed to make serious political descisions regarding children, surely. Which mightn't be a bad idea.
Starrfall on 2/7/2008 at 14:34
That's only a problem if you believe the position is untenable. Lots of people don't!

also, dont you know the children are our future? Teach them well.

Yeah, you can enrage people with the juicy details, no doubt about that, but in civilised countries court decisions aren't made to revenge the victims.
And if you're against the death penalty for ethical reasons but want to make an exception for child rapists because you have children - then maybe your ethics were worthless to begin with.

there is always an exception to the rule. Always, show the beauty they possess inside.

Right, the decisions are made to punish people for doing terrible things. But you can try to make it less terrible by avoiding the realities of the crime if you want, I guess.
And who in the name of christ are you even referring to in the second half of that post?
