It is from Christina Romer, who helped draft the bill. So clearly it is a biased article. However, she does answer some of the concerns that you raise (like the existence of longer term spending, etc).

Starreh - does this mean you're not going to post a detailed interpretation here? :(

Well it's about time they stopped fueling that illegal war. It just proves that Obama is intelligent, sensible and decent which is good. Unlike the warmongering bastards in the previous administration. I despise the Bush administration so much. On another positive note, the Australian Prime Minister also made plans to withdraw from Iraq.
Chade on 4/3/2009 at 01:09
Talking about the troop withdrawal on the basis of whether the war is illegal or not is a bit silly right now, as the Iraqi government had already asked the American troops to leave by a certain date. As long as the Americans leave by that date, they should be fine (or at least, in no worse moral/legal standing then they are right now).

fett, just to follow up a bit, let me spin my beef in a different way.
We need to raise taxes which Obama has in part done. However, the problem is he is exponentially increasing spending as well. We need to dig ourselves out of the spending hole we are already in. Instead, we are forcing 2 - 3% of the population to finance a 7 trillion dollar spending spree that will self-destruct. This population will either be unable or unwilling to do this long term, and it is going to hurt us and our children. Eventually the government will have to do one of three things:
1. Abandon the spending (ya right)
2. Massively inflate the dollar to inflate away the debt
3. Default on government bonds and kill the dollar
Take your pick. That's my beef. This administration is just as unrestrained and irresponsible as the last administration.
The right answer is increase taxes and reduce spending. Any politician that recommends this would not be re-elected, so they won't do it. They have zero chutzpah.

the_grip, as far as I can tell, mainstream economic thought is overwhelmingly in favour of stimulus spending right now ... and leaving the deficit untill later. After all, you can't tax what you don't have.
Thief13x on 4/3/2009 at 02:13
Thats what alot of administrations have said, Chade, and look at the deficit today. We had to replace the national debt clock in time square FFS. That said, major props to Obama on his ambitious debt-reduction goal, thats sure as HELL more than the last administration even thought about thinking about doing.
Guys, lets stop all the distracting chatter now, gotta finish bailing AIG out so hush! Spend now, think later, that's the order for the day. (now if only Americans would follow suit says Wall St., ha ha)
