By the time the game comes out, I think that almost everything Thief (from earlier games) won't be there.
Except that it'll be a game about a thief named Garrett who just wants to make ends meet but somehow ends up getting involved in a bigger conspiracy, and it's set in a fantasy-steampunk setting known as The City. But yeah, aside from that, it'll have nothing at all to do with the earlier games.
Jesus Christ, people. A good sequel, or reboot, isn't made by just running down a checklist of things that were in the previous entry. If burricks and Keepers are not relevant to the story of this new game, then there is no reason for them to be in the game. Certainly it's nice for old fans if they're mentioned in passing, or referenced, just like in TMA when we see a Hammerite talking to a Mechanist in the docks, but anything more than that and you're just bogging down the story with unnecessary clutter.

That'd be fine henke, if the rest of it was all in keeping with the canon. It's the fact that it's so far divorced from the originals and yet somehow harks back to them that seems to be upsetting people.
It's either Thief and the Garrett we know or its not at all.
Went have some odd hybrid? That's the impression I get.
It's not my opinion BTW; I think it perfectly possible to have an alt universe. Could be like the end of The Butterfly Effect (not the baby ending) where he sees someone in the street and they kind of clock each other but then, well... If you've seen it you'll know what I mean. And it is similar to the new Star Trek - different but there are emotional resonances everywhere.

Begs the question though - what is the bloody point in having an alternative universe? Either work with something or make something new. It just seems weird and lazy.

I agree...It smells strongly like a rationalization, in order to appease the fanbase...Garrett is the same age far into the future, with a new personality and corset to match...who isn't able to jump when he wants to, etc.
Very suspicious.

Reboots and different takes on a story/character/universe can be interesting, e.g. Battlestar Galactica, the recent Hannibal series, Chris Nolan's Batman movies. All of these are interesting in part because of how they relate to earlier versions of the IP. I don't see why games in general and Thief in particular should be different, at least in principle.
Also, for the record, I find the Jenivere = Basso's bird thing quite clever, at least as a throwaway reference, what with Jenivere having been Basso's 'bird' to begin with and responding to a birdcall in Thief 2...

I can only guess. They like the idea, like some of the core aspects of the universe and the game and to call it something different would only get calls of "Thief rip off! Boo! Who do you think you're trying to fool?".
Rebooting it this way allows them to keep the core they like but express their own creativity within the Thief framework.

Say, that is pretty clever! I had completely forgot about the birdcall. :D Probably this will annoy the people who didn't like the change in the first place even more, though.
I'd like to know the why behind the decision to make a reboot, as well. I'm personally seeing plenty of indication that the team has really studied the lore and put some serious effort to it, and still they decided to go with a reboot.
Maybe Subjective Effect is right, but I'd really like to hear it from the devs. I'm hoping somekind of "making of" from the dev team after Thief releases (or before, if possible, of course).

Vae is probably right though - it's so suspicious. The whole thing. It' like they are doing it just to insult us.

First of all, THIEF is a unique, interactive, virtual world experience...which story is created from, due to a particular set of universe mechanics.
The thing is, most fans have been waiting almost a decade to revisit the unique mystery and wonder that can only be found in this virtual world, and they know that by diminishing or removing THIEF Universe fundamentals like magic, undead, the stratified struggle between the forces of Order and Chaos, extraplanar relationships, true Garrett, etc....will only lead to a world that can not possibly capture that unique rich experience...regardless of storyline.

Well, you might think they're doing this to insult us, yet they would never waste their efforts on such a thing...The reality is that the fanbase isn't their target market, that's all...and so they've adjusted their design philosophy to fulfill what they perceive the "modern console gamer" will appreciate (simplified player mechanics, simplified universe mechanics, badass superpowered Garrett with a corset, etc.)...

Vae, you realize SE was being sarcastic?
Also, asuming you don't count minor occurances here and there (if you do then stop complaining about missing factions in T4), T1 is the only game in the series featuring different planes, and T2 doesn't feature undead.
I also strongly disagree that the struggle between order and chaos is the only thief story worth telling. I'm glad it's not being rehashed in T4.
That leaves magic, which sounds like it is being done very tastefully in T4 IMO, and Garrett, who admittedly looks atrocious and sounds ... bad on average.
