Also, am I the only one who is truly bothered with the whole brothel thing? It just feels so ..... wrong.
If it helps at all, Truart spent time with hookers in T2, and T2X had a brothel level as well (complete with a naked body).

In Thief 2 it was mentioned in some readables, which is nowhere near a mission set in a brothel. T2X was an unofficial campaign, so, excellent though T2X was, it's not relevant in this case.

I was just saying the whole idea of prostitution/hookers etc isn't completely foreign to Thief. While T2X is not official, most people consider it very much in the spirit of the original Thief games.
Personally I don't have an issue with any kind of brothel, as long as there's not explicit sex or excessive nudity or anything like that. Thief was always extremely subtle in regards to that stuff. This quote was worrisome when I read it in one of those articles about Thief's troubled development cycle:
Quote:
According to a source, the demo took nearly 10 months of development time, roughly six of which required the participation of nearly every content creator on the team. The level, which takes place in part inside a brothel, apparently featured "Cinemax-level" sex sequences at one point that some animators were uncomfortable creating.

Garrett helped Basso in Thief 1 so he could get to pork Basso's sister. He's also a thief, a criminal.
I find it odd that people should baulk at a brothel given the entire setting and story. It's a little prudish given that this is a game that is more suited for mature audiences, no?
Renault on 29/7/2013 at 19:46
Um, Basso wanted to marry Jenivere, not just pork her. It's not remotely the same thing, unless you've been talking to my wife.
I've always thought of Thief as being somewhat adult, but not hardcore. As mentioned, there's no explicit sex, but also no gory or graphic violence, and no real swearing or cursing. I guess if it were a movie, you'd almost have to give it a PG-13, althought I'm sure it's game rating is "Mature."
Edit: Conflicting reports on Amazon, some listings show it as "M for mature" but others only have it as "12+" for a Pegi rating.

Garrett wanted to pork Basso's
sister. Jenivere was invented for Thief 2. We never do find out if Garrett was successful though.
I am quite okay with the idea of Garrett robbing a brothel - it's sensible, he wants an amulet someone is wearing. He could rob him at the public bath too I guess, but if the guy was going to a brothel it'll be even easier - especially if it's also an opium den (Garrett could probably rob the dude in front of him dressed as a burrick and get away with it). So from G's POV it's the most sensible way to rob this guy.

That's just... wow. Yeah, I read that earlier already, but it still makes me ashamed on behalf of EM that they even considered it. I wonder if they mo-capped the scenes, too. :joke:
By the way, am I completely wrong here: I seem to recall that Thief 2 Gold was supposed to feature a brothel level?
I still take issue with the idea. That's just the way I look at things, not so much to do with Thief specifically. Nothing prudish with my principals or beliefs. While Thief never officially featured a brothel before and it's new in the context of Thief, it's nothing new or original in the gaming scene - especially with Dishonored not far behind. I'm not saying that the subject should be a taboo, but why continue perpetuating it ad nauseum in every goddamn medium? It's nothing but mind-numbing, IMO. No place for imagination - again, TDP/TMA merely hinted about it and were generally more subtle about it. That's the way you do it.
It's not going to stop me playing or enjoying Thief (provided it's good to begin with), but I can't be convinced to not feel that this is something the game would've easily done very well without. I'm not angry or anything. Just slightly disappointed.
That said, I think it is pretty cool that the brothel is set up on the (former) actual Keeper compound. And yeah, Triangletooth's point is a good one.
Renault on 29/7/2013 at 20:00
Oh yeah, knew that, I was reading one thing and thinking another. Although, I think it's stated pretty subtlety in regards to Basso's sister, I think it's only mentioned in the objectives, not in any readables.

Yeah, you know there would be a lot of loot there, in one form or another.

Yeah, if that's the case, I'm seriously thankful Stephen Russell didn't get the role!

Don't think so, it was a slum, a museum, a college, and a necromancer's castle, with the possibility of a old Hammerite church as well. Never heard anything about a brothel.

I actually think it's pretty cool if they have used the real architecture of the compound. In the original cannon it was a hidden compound and now that it's revealed and unused why wouldn't someone take it over? To have Keeper statues around is kind of cool.
So before I start, I know most of you are aware but to clarify - the story of Eidos-Montreal's Thief is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the narrative of the classic Thief games. It stands on its own as a brand new story in the Thief franchise. My personal analogy is to say that it takes place in a (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_universe_(fiction)) parallel Thief universe.
The narrative occurs at a later point in history seen before in the Thief franchise - this story occurs in a somewhat more modern, pre-industrial/Victorian time. The original factions have not been forgotten or left out of the game - as you mention Subjective Effect, the first demo shown took place in the 'House of Blossoms' - the former Keeper Library.
I can't reveal too much, but since the point in history you're familiar with in the Thief world something has happened that resulted in big consequences for the Keepers and many other factions. To be clear, the Keepers still very much existed in the past and their impact on the world is all around in this universe - but we're at a different point in time. Keep in mind, again, that this is an alternative storyline, not a continuation or re-telling - but anybody familiar with the classic Thief games will still definitely recognize much in the universe.
To answer your questions in advance: Yes, this will be explained in the game for those of you who will hunt for it, but no, it's not a major narrative pillar.
We've got a trailer (and a community video) on the way that will explain a lot of the things around the story, lore and the factions we'll find at conflict. I saw the latest cut recently and it's looking awesome - can't WAIT to see it out there :)
