Poisoned carrots?

That sounds even worse than it being a lame coincidence.

I posted a question in the most recent Q&A over at Eidos to hopefully clarify the Garrett coma/being away thing.
Of course, if they would have just explained it right the first time...

It just screams LAME. It borders on embarrassing. I can't believe they couldn't do a better job with the story than
that, given the rich setting of the Thief universe.
Well, first of all, this isn't the rich setting of the THIEF Universe...that has been corrupted or vanquished...and, they have to make sure the 10 year olds can relate to the story.

... or it could have been poisoned cheese.
Poisoned cheese, mysteriously received from the brothel...:)

No it's not, at all. He says that he thinks "Thief's world is probably not nice to coma victims". Coma victims. So he's in a coma. That's not magical suspended animation, that's a coma. And the rest of it. Christ.
Ok, I really don't want to derail the thread with yet another one of these stupid arguments, so I'm going to make one attempt to explain this to you, and then that's it. No more posts on the subject from me.
Nice and slowly now:

It's just odd how they discuss things like they're holding something back that's more than just "oh and there's another big bad" ...
(Translation: I think there's more to the story then EM have disclosed)... like ...
(Translation: what comes up next is an example of this)... I don't understand how ...
(Translation: in this context, a colloquial use of the phrase indicating that whatever comes up next seems far fetched and is probably not true)... Garrett could be out cold for a year (Thief's world is probably not nice to coma victims) and there not be some kind of intervention. ...
(Translation: Garrett being naturally in a coma for a year is the thing which is far fetched and probably not true)... It seems weird.
(Translation: Just in case you missed it the first time, I'll repeat again that this is something I think is far fetched and probably not true.)Now let's check this against his later extended explanation, just to make triply sure we've got it right:

I said it was weird. Garrett being unconscious for a year MUST require magic because there's no way anyone in the Thief universe would look after him (A: they'd probably think him dead, B: they don't have the tech) were it a normal coma (which is the only normal explanation for being out for a year).
Yep, got it.

I've thought about this whole bastardization of the Thief saga by EM thing and have decided that anyone who wants to really know what T4 is going to be like, gameplay-wise, should just go play the latest Tomb Raider (Reboot, of course). The more I read, the more I believe EM has created a general template, beginning with DX:HR, for all their future games. With Tomb Raider Reboot EM seems to have perfected that template, unfortunately, and it looks like they're using that template for T4 as well.
Dia, this seems a bit of a wierd thing to say?
EM had nothing to do with the Tomb Raider reboot. DX:HR didn't have lots of cut-scenes, and no QTEs. Finally, we know thief doesn't have lots of cutscenes, and almost no QTEs. I don't see the comparison between Tomb Raider and either game, really.

Also Erin and Garrett knew they were on the same job, apparently it was Basso's idea to get them to stop hating each other or something.
Basso? We know that somebody brought them together without their knowledge. Do you have a source that suggests it's Basso, and that he did it to get them to stop hating each other? Off the top of my head I can't remember reading that anywhere.

Oh, ok. Video is mostly dead to me, so I'll just assume that's true until someone tells me otherwise.
TriangleTooth on 11/9/2013 at 21:32
Actually youtube is down for me as well. If I was wrong about this detail due to mis-remembering the video then I apologise, but I'm pretty sure they said it was Basso's idea.
Chade on 11/9/2013 at 21:45
Oh, sorry, I didn't mean I couldn't access the video, I meant I often don't bother to watch videos. I find it annoying to watch someone talk when I could be reading instead.

Here's the relevant info...
Quote:
Garrett some years ago he had a protege a young girl called Erin that he tried to teach to be like him, to be a master thief. But Erin has a very different kind of spirit and she tends to kill, where as Garrett always said that killing is an extreme measure, that you know, should be a last resort, umm, and so they split. And then Basso, Garrett's old friend and friends, brings them back together again, thinking it would be a good idea, and sends them off on an incredibly dangerous job. ~ Stephen Gallagher
