Begs the question though - what is the bloody point in having an alternative universe? Either work with something or make something new. It just seems weird and lazy.
To target a new audience who has never played and likely is not interested in playing the original games at present. Eidos deemed the market of existing Thief customers to be too small to cater towards. It wants to introduce new players to the series. They facilitate this by changing as much as possible to appeal to current trends, fashions, and of course the current generation of younger console gamers.
Thief 3 did much to try to make both camps happy - the old guard and new players. That didn't work financially. So in this case they decided to completely abandon the old guard market entirely.

Hey in the newest QA thread at EM forums someone asked if due to recent explanations of the storyline this really does follow on from TDS. Garrett's apprentice, Erin, could be the girl from TDS. The reasoning is that all the Baron takeover stuff seems to happen AFTER she dies, and they're very specific about Garrett waking a year later to find the city completely different. Then they say he finds something more mysterious is going on well beyond the baron/graven war.
This is a long shot but: What if it follows from TDS, the city is the one we know until the moment Garrett is knocked out and Erin dies and some kind of magic - possibly keeper related or something, has transformed the city. I'm not saying this would be a good plot but it's an interesting if unlikely hypothesis.

That directly contradicts their statements about the world, so I doubt it's literally true.
It is a bit of a coincidence, though. I wouldn't be surprised if they originally wanted to continue the thief 3 storyline, and only later decided that they wouldn't reintroduce the classic factions and/or wanted a bit more freedom, turning it into a reboot.
I also wouldn't be surprised if it's just a coincidence. It seems plausible they could have come up with the storyline by just looking for something Garrett might struggle with. That's what they claimed their process was in interviews.

A bit of a reach, TriangleTooth. They've already stated that this is a reboot, not a sequel. Plus, Garrett would need to be pretty old if the little girl from the end of TDS is all grown up now and a fairly competent adult thief. The Garrett they've shown us so far has been fairly young, probably somewhere in his twenties.
They've also stated that the New Thief world is mostly devoid of magic, so to say some grand Keeper spell completely transforms the entire City (and for no real apparent reason), it doesn't seem to jive with what they've told us so far.

Still, it brings me amusement. To think that those cool moments in original Thief, where you were in some fancy mansion and whatnot, are the moments that most players wanted more of, with less of the supernatural. They got it in Thief II, but the game kept the magic relatively intact. Deadly Shadow at least brought back some supernatural elements that Thief II was lacking in, yet the entry was tragic nonetheless.
NuThief seems to be hinting that the entire game will be forced "updated mansion and city style" design. In hindsight we will see that the magic was always an intriguing and critical element of Thief, ingrained deep within its core. Beware our worst fears coming. With mostly "city stealth", coupled with train track game play, I think that this recipe can innovate nothing to avail the games illustrious legacy, and can truly produce only one result:
Mediocrity.
And that, is the worst insult that one could possibly bestow upon our loving and once masterfully crafting forefathers: Looking Glass Studios. Then again... Wait, I think I finally got it. The more people keep mucking up the series, the more their secrets of ancient game crafting techniques are safe.
Perhaps LGS *wanted* it to remain a mystery!

I know, it was a silly hypothesis. It's just odd how they discuss things like they're holding something back that's more than just "oh and there's another big bad" like I don't understand how Garrett could be out cold for a year (Thief's world is probably not nice to coma victims) and there not be some kind of intervention. It seems weird.
And chade yeah it also smelled a bit like a story that's been revised many times, with elements of a sequel making their way into the final take. Maybe Erin was supposed to be the TDS girl then they changed that, who knows?
Again it's weird for them to go with the city changes for Garrett route, what's the point? Garrett could easily have lived in the city under the Baron's thumb for a long time and it would tell pretty much the same story.

For perspective...
1) NuThief is not a prequel or sequel...In fact, it isn't a real THIEF game, at all...EM is calling this faster-paced, contextually-limited monstrosity, "Thief", only because they happen to own the the rights to the name...not because there was ever any intention to embrace the core design philosophy that distinguishes and constitutes a THIEF game.
2) They're using a different character who happens to be named Garrett...They're calling this new character "Garrett", only because the name is associated with the franchise...and they willingly do this, even though it blatantly disrespects the legacy of a much beloved character.
3) This isn't "The City"...It's a different city, in a different demagicalized universe...They're calling it "The City", only because the name is associated with the franchise...even though this is blasphemy, and they will be rebuked accordingly.

Summed it up perfectly

Wait.
You actually think Garrett is supposed to just have been unconscious for a year?
I know I've made a mistake here. Can you clarify what you mean?

It's supposed to be a new beginning, for him, for us, for the franchise.

The two are standing on the roof when a sudden, violent shift of the building sends them both hurdling down to the cobblestones below, where Erin dies and all goes black for Garrett. Garrett wakes up in a city crumbled under corruption, greed and an unjust rule. His friends tell him he has been gone for one year.
It does seem like he is unconscious for a year. It's not clear to me whether or not you've seen this?
EDIT: Hey, maybe Garrett really
is a zombie this time. :p
