It's an interesting conundrum, isn't it? Garrett and Corvo are so similar and although Garrett precedes Corvo in the public perception who are ignorant of Garrett it appears that he is a Corvo imitator, especially if he has "powers".
It's a bit sad really.
New generations of gamers means console gamers who don't care about past titles and compare everything with their most recent acquired and played titles.
But still, the way people who have no idea of the original saga compare it to Dishonored could turn into it's favor and attract most Dishonored fans and players

even though Thief was critically acclaimed and is considered the father of stealth genre, it was a casi-failure given sold units. The saga was just barely profitable in economic terms
I'm sure this is bulshit. People with figures will be along shortly to correct you.

That's strange. Last year when I checked some sources they talked about "around 50,000 sold units of TDP", there's a zero missing there. I removed the wrong statement from my post

Sadly enough, that pretty much says it all. And T4 will suffer for it, at least as far as most hard-core Thief fans are concerned. Of course EM will cater to 'new generations of gamers'; that's where the money is.

What I read is that LGS was already deep in the hole financially by the time Thief got released, and despite making a lot of money off of them, it wasn't enough to save the studio.

Thief appeared in late 1998 and was a major hit, eventually making millions of dollars for Looking Glass. Had Thief not been a big hit, Looking Glass would almost certainly have folded. Instead, Thief appeared to revitalize the company. Thief Gold sold well, and System Shock II sales were passable. Thief II is currently on the way to being an even bigger hit than Thief I. However, Flight Unlimited III (released in 1999) sold quite poorly and ate the gains from System Shock II due to an agreement with Electronic Arts to pay off advances for both projects with the royalties from both projects.
Furthermore, there is extensive circumstantial evidence that Thief’s success, great though it was, may have done little more than plug the holes that debt had left in Looking Glass’ budget. Thief ensured that, if all went well, Looking Glass could survive 1999 and 2000.

A bit? It's quite depressing if you ask me. The amount of ignorance from today's gaming communities and gamers in general is shockingly strong.
Even worse if you get into an argument with one.
