Of course the symbol means something. But people have to be allowed to protest against what the symbol represents.

It's a thing. An object. Take away the meaning people have placed into it, and it is just physical matter.
I'm not a very materialistic person, so I never understood too well how people can project sentimentality into an object.
What the flag-burners and those offended by the burning of flags forget is what's really important--the people.

Burn them for good measure. Especially the ones who answer 'yes' to the question 'does burning flags make you go all hysterical?'

Ok, so why would they protest against freedom from tyranny and oppression? Against individual religious liberty? That's what the flag represents to people around the globe who have been given their freedom by American men who fought and died for it.
I'm telling you, these people are a bunch of communists. They would like to see our treasured way of life destroyed and replaced with a socialist society which doesn't value human life or personal property. They are getting their way, slowly, through the so-called Democratic Party, which in the past 40 years has been all but taken over by militant feminazis, marxists, environmental extremists, and every other anti-freedom, anti-capitalist wacko movement out there.

I doubt very seriously that those kids in Berkley would like a totalitarian regime controlled entirely by the central government. There's a big difference between socialism and Stalinism.
Edit: From some points of view, it is the US who is being tyrannical. Our "exporting democracy" bandwagon is pretty similar to conquest.

Quite true. The only problem is, you CAN'T take away it's meaning. History can't be undone. It can be rewritten by leftist college professors like those in Berkeley, but they will only fool some of the people some of the time. It can be discarded and forgotten by society, but only willingly.

The flag means different things to different people.
And I'm not sure what you even mean by "communist". Socialism != stalinism. If they are even actual socialists in the first place.

I was going to type a serious response, but then I realised this guy is either a troll or someone who will ignore/twist your comments anyways.
All in all, flags are meaningless instruments of identifying nations. This overly romantic shit goverments build around these objects is just to keep the people happy.
I am not proud of my flag. I am not proud of my country. I just feel lucky that I happened to be born here.

Bollocks.
I'm English. America saved our collective arses back in 1940something. The American Flag is disposable pop culture; burning it, dripping water on it's head or denying it access to daylight has no reflection at all whatsoever on the various good deeds done by Americans past and present. Infact, it's rather embarrassing that you hold it in such bizarre regard. Get a grip.

Wrong. Conquest is conquering another nation, killing all the people, and claiming their land. We aren't doing that. We are letting them keep their lives, their land, and their property. We're not making them become American citizens. We're not making them pay taxes to us. We're simply helping them establish a free democracy in place of a corrupt, murderous totalitarian regime that ruled by fear and intimidation. They even get to keep their oil!
Of course we're exporting democracy! We have plenty of it to share. And we're not asking for anything in return except to stop breeding and funding terrorists.
