What the flag represents should be strong enough to survive without a flag to represent it.

The living are no more valued than the dead? Are you really saying that? [edit - not you Starry]
Anyway I can understand the notion that this is about what the flag represents - I think to say it's just a piece of cloth is to miss the point. If I was to spit on a photo of someone's wife or family, they wouldn't just say "eh it's just a bit of paper who cares" - it's kind of obvious my expression of disgust isn't aimed at paper.
However, I think still think people should be allowed to express themselves in this manner.

These idiots are just trying to get media attention, that's all. Like the Westboro Baptist Church, if you ignore them they'll go away.

I'll be over it once these liberal pot-smoking hippie-faggot commies realize that they wouldn't be in a free country if it weren't for guys like me. If we all thought like they did, we would lose the very freedom that they are abusing.
This country is free because we allow them to do what they are doing. I don't agree with it either... the soldiers have little choice. They're just following orders. They don't make the decisions, the politicians do.
Banning protests like this would be the exact opposite of a free country--it would be a very fascist law.

Wang dang sweet poontang!
Although I would never burn our flag, and I don't support those who do, I realize it's an expression for some. I would never take away the freedom to do such an action. This country is founded upon values of self expression and freedom to live the way you want.

you could make a big-ass kebab out of a flag you know, as long as it was made of dough.
catbarf on 16/2/2008 at 16:54
I think we could do with a little less apple-pie-shitting-patriotism. The fact that people get so worked up over burning a cloth with funny colors is amusing at best. You shouldn't need to stick up flags everywhere to remind you of what country you live it, nor should you need them everywhere to support your country. And if someone wants to burn it to show displeasure with their country, how is that worse than hosting a rally, march, or campaign?
Moi Dix Mois- It's interesting in that the US is far more similar to fundamentalist Middle-Eastern countries than any of Europe- in quite a few ways.
