Hmm,
'sometimes combat can't be avoided'
I hope thats not true! :(
'Garrett is running through the streets and it looks like an industrial mirrors edge, really fast and slick, he is diving over tables and under carts'
Doesn't sound much like thief at all!
Sounds more like mirrors edge yes, or assassins creed, or more like set pieces at the end of missions so they end with a bang! :cheeky:
Maybe some sort of interactive cutscenes like in the new tomb raider game where, however beautiful they look, your involvement in them is actually quite minimal, I predict that each new thief mission ends with some big event that will have you quicktime eventing your way to freedom, rather than just a simple 'get back to the streets' mission complete. The majority of that area will then impossible to revisit because it's all caved in or whatever.
Also I predict that the bridge from the screenshots will be destroyed while you are on it so you have to run while holding down the 'parkour button' and quicktime yourself past falling towers and rubble! :joke:

Remember that Stephen Russell was dumped because -- more importantly than lending a voice -- the voice actor had to perform stunts (yeah, I don't get it either). So no, it's not going to be like the Thief of old. At all.
In the end, the game may be good, or it may be bad. But it is going to be, as so many "new" games are now, a mixture of all the trendy gimmicks and bullshit that have propelled the current generation games into "best sellers".
Simply put, it's going to be what's considered acceptable to (or what's thought of by the developers as expected by) today's gamers.

Thanks for sharing Esme; hadn't seen this one yet.
Oh God, where do I begin? Okay, the one narrator 'Josh'? (sounds like the one who actually saw the T4 demo - couldn't understand Ryan's pronunciation of the other guy's name so I'll just refer to him as 'J') says that it's the old Thief with a 'next-gen sheen'. I suppose that was inevitable, since EM has been pretty firm in their stance that this in NOT the old Thief we know, but their reinvention or reboot. So even though I KNOW this, that remark still pricked. If EM brags one more time how they've geared T4 to 'Next-Gen' gamers I think I'm gonna throw up.
The arrows are back, but 'J' says he's not sure which ones, though he does mention the rope arrow. Looking at those arrows it appears that there is an arrow with some sort of little chamber underneath the arrowhead that contains blue liquid that could be water. The same with the arrow next to it that could contain, what(?), glowing embers? The last arrow looks like it has a chamber that is totally enclosed and I'm making a big assumption here that that one could indeed be a chamber containing a sort of gas? It would make sense since EM obviously doesn't want to reprise the original types of water, fire, and gas arrows (too magicky?) - they'd just make them more realistically 'functional' (more mechanical?) by giving them small chambers containing the various elements. But the size of the chambers is very small and I can't see putting out a lit torch just with that small bit of water alone. Likewise, the alleged gas arrow doesn't look like it could contain enough gas to knock out anything larger than a rat or small cat. Oh well. More questions.
And again with the 3rd person crap. Once again, gratuitous imo. It's guaranteed to break my immersion. The whole 'Still pretty much a stealth game but ....' 'sometimes combat can't be avoided' pissed me off as well. So much for wanting to ghost the damned game. And yet again with the take-down scenes, but this time a comparison to DX:HR is actually shown. What if I WANT to do my own take-downs, EM? Why are you taking yet another action out of my hands and letting your kewl animators do it for me? Definitely thumbs down on that one. Btw, as much as I loved DX:HR, the take-down scenes got old very quickly and had me wishing EM would relinquish control so that I could do the all take-downs on my own.
The part about the brothel really bothered me; the way 'J' described it, Garrett becomes a bit of a voyeur in the brothel and 'J' said EM had obviously spent a lot of time, etc., to make the brothel seem as though it's going to be a 'major component' in the game (I think I also heard that this is where some pretty foul language can be overheard ... sad that EM felt they had to resort to that - for what? To further guarantee the interest of young gamers who aren't allowed to use that language at home?). Don't know if I care for that idea, not that I'm a prude or anything. I'm sure they can rationalize that the brothel would be a place for prime pickings for Garrett, afterall, the patrons are in various states of undress and there's bound to be more than one pile of clothing with loot in it. But the idea of the brothel seems geared towards the teenage mentality wherein brothels are 'like omg people have s.e.x. in there and that's so kewl'. Gratuitous would be my word of choice yet again. 'J' used the words 'smut and greed'. Just not the kind of place I'd care to spend any length of time in. But the devs seem to have decided to make this an Important Place, as NuGarrett finds his glyph decoder medallion there.
Ahhh, and now we have a medallion-like-a-decoder-ring for glyphs. Wutthefrak? 'J' seems to think there's magic involved (oh we should be so lucky), but alas, another one of those aspects of T4 which has yet to be explained. (I wonder how many Achievements will be linked to that device? :ebil: )
One interesting aspect is that in T4 NuGarrett (sorry, just can't bring myself to call that imposter 'Garrett' - he still looks like an Assassins Creed nightmare to me) is able to examine any item he's considering stealing ... but that interest was quickly negated for me when 'J' explained that with the touch of a (back?) button you'll get a 'readout' that shows you its worth. Why can't the worth just appear on the screen when he picks the object up? Or is that too simple for today's younger gamers?
Then we get to the locks. Oh for frak's sake! Could EM be any more blatant in their direct rip-off of Oblivion-style locks? So; so far we've got aspects of DX:HR, Mirror's Edge, Oblivion, Dishonored, and Assassins Creed all incorporated into T4. Sounds like the T4 devs were having writer's block or something and decided to steal ideas/aspects of other games instead of coming up with something original. T4 could very well turn out to be a sad mess. But I'm sure the 'Next-Gen' gamers will probably like it.
The more I hear, see, and read, the less inclined I feel to actually try to play this game when (and if) it's released. It's not Thief anymore, no matter how big they print the word 'Thief' on the box. Why couldn't they have just called it something else? Like 'Travesty'.
Oh, but it does have very pretty graphics.

There are hardcore Thief fans who think combat can't be avoided at times in any or all the Thief games. They pop up in discussions from time to time. It's one of the reasons a portion of the fanbase wants extra combat, easier combat, a larger arsenal, more power in combat, more fancypants kewlness in combat. They never think of the stealth side of getting caught or cornered. They never look to the items in their inventory designed to stop the combatants in their tracks. How do console controllers handle hotkeys these days?

One of the things I'm potentially excited about with Thief 4, although it's too early to say with any great confidence, is that some articles have suggested more tools which help the player run away after being spotted.
This could potentially be quite an improvement over Thief 1-3. I've seen quite a few people who didn't realize you can avoid combat in thief.
I'd also like to see more tools for getting off the "slippery slope" between a guard becoming alert, and actually seeing you. But I can't think of any good candidates off the top of my head (maybe a trained rat :p).

This was posted somewhere, or mentioned anyway -- and IIRC it got about the same treatment it's getting now -- but it got buried, so I don't see a problem with having a thread to talk about it.

That is something that COULD be fun. LIke tossing stuff in the way perhaps. I like some of the intro shots of him looking at the jewelry and the guard and such. Breaking through a window is cool too.
Don't like 3rd person. I really really hate the character design for Garrett. Keeps reminding me of Stuart Townsend from those crappy vampire movies. And even when he dodges under the weapon of the guard. When playing TDP, I frequently find myself doing this! Going just under it. I can see myself doing it. I hear the guard going "AUUUUGH!" and hear a *CLANG!* and imagine that I'm seeing it happen. That's the power of that game. I can see myself getting tired of the slowmo shot after the second time.
And hearing him answer the question "Did you play the original games?"with a befuddled and blaze "Uh...yeah a little." and then seeing the movie of someone just buring through it at topspeed (not sure if it was him or just a generic shot they stole from the internet) really steamed me!
