I am currently playing Oblivion alternately with my brother using the same character and was dissapointed to hear that depite having risen to the head of the mages guild, he was ejected from it for killing an apprentice he had lured to the Arch-mage's chambers in Arcane University.
Who had the authority to eject him?
And surely as the head of the guild you ought to be able to change the rules of membership/conduct?
Apparently when he went back into the university he was grudgingly told that the mages might take him back.

Or just as likely said: "We don't want to follow someone who kills us at random."
If someone doesn't acknowledge you as their leader then it won't matter what you think.
