DX would've been particularly annoying if you just 'lost' everything, since think of all the weapon mods you've usually applied by that point.
At least in half life, a pistol is just a pistol. In DX, a pistol can be my personalised pistol...

That reminds me: the sequel to
Out of this World, called
Heart of the Alien [1994], starts with the guy in a jail, unarmed.
Don't forget the prison escape early on in Out of this World.

I used to debate this with my mate years ago, "Was Conrad the guy from AW?" IIRC the main guy from AW was called lenny or something.
But fact is, if anything Flashback(awesome) is a spiritual successor. Fade to Black was a bit shit, especially the way it took about half a minute to load the 1.5 second death scene.

Conrad was from Flashback, Lester was from Another World.

Can't believe I forgot to mention Lock & Key.

Damn!! I was just about to mention Lock & Key and was surprised it wasn't mentioned ... and then I turned the page and ... damn! :nono: :cheeky:
A few Thief contest missions start with a weaponless prisonbreak: Old Comrades Old Debts, Breakout from Apocalypse Prison, Evendale (just released ... and this was the trickest of them all, because I was running away from 3 guards in broad light; the whole thing involves quick pickpocketing).
Edit: also, there was speculation (& maybe Saturnine suggested it as well) that Seventh Crystal Part 2 would start with a prison break, considering that part 1 ends with a trial, and if you open up the last level in dromed you can see the beginnings of the prison under the ct. house. (Maybe now we'll never know.)
A number of FMs also involve weaponless starts and finding weapons, making it into something of a cliche in Thief FMs: Emilie Victor, Amnesia, Ominous Bequest, JIS's Elevator Mission, Midnight at Murkbell's first half ... I know there are some others.
Back to DX, ah to play it again for the first time... The scene with Lebedev was magical at the time ... I just remember the game keeping the momentum going for so long ... it just wouldn't let me go, at the very least until leaving Hong Kong ... and even towards the end it kept things interesting right up until the end. Very well constructed plot, as everybody already knows.

I'll admit there are a lot of games listed here, but many of which I've never heard of, nevermind actually played. So let's assume for a second that the "prison break-out" scenario is "common," but I still don't think it's "cliché." I also would suggest that the prison break-out scene in Deus Ex is integral to its plot because of the introduction of J.C. to Daedalus, and the determination of Paul's fate. Anyway, my point is that if you put the MJ12 prison scenario into the context of the overall plot, it carries more credence than a simple "hero gets thrown in the dungeon and miraculously escapes by finding a loose brick in the wall," or whatever other unlikely rescue scenario not related to just the continuation of the plot. Consider factors integral to the escape of J.C.:
* J.C. is kept alive for study of the kill switch, instead of killed outright by the UNATCO raid on Paul's apartment, or Anna or Gunther (depending whether you killed Anna in the 747)
* Daedalus is an Illuminati construct, a protocol which by its own admission considered MJ12 to be a threat
* some of Daedalus' code runs on all communications equipment, including electronic security on the holding doors
* Daedalus is involved yet again to contact Jock, a necessary contact and resource in the anti-MJ12/pro-NSF movement
If you've ever seen an escape scenario which is so perfectly tailored for the surrounding plot and time period, let me know! :)

The circumstance of escaping from prison may be cliche, but the location of the prison was surprising.

Certainly was, the moment I got out, I thought "Hey, I know this place." It was great. The fact that Paul was dead on my run through meant I didn't know where it was before I escaped.
