Just too bad that they had to go for the one cliche that's in every game with RPG connections - waking up in prison with no equipment and escaping. :tsktsk: :sly:
Meanwhile, "Sticks and stones" is a great line :cheeky:
Please tell me how many (and which) games created prior to 1999 have this exact scenario? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I DO find it hard to believe this is as "cliché" as you purport.
I am dismayed by the lack of recognition the writers from 7 Crows get for seeing so many bits of the future as they did... Remember, New York being the target of terrorists didn't happen until 2001 - two years AFTER DX was released. The increasing interest and development of nanotechnology in the world of bio-modifications is developing. The United Nations does play a role in coordinating the anti-terrorist agenda, although currently it is more focused in Serbia and (although less conspicuously, and not in the more visible form of UN Troops) the Middle East. The brilliance of writers to expand upon the Illuminati Trilogy, which itself was a fictional account of the real, historical group of the Illuminati, was brilliant. Now people think "The DaVinci Code" is somehow ground-breaking? Please. It's just another novel. Deus Ex expanded it, and lets players live it. Warren Spector's Midas-touch isn't without merit. The guy simply knows what works.

Let's hope they're not right about the Grey Death

Moop: Deus Ex and Metal Gear Solid did it, and I'm pretty sure it was in an FF game, plus a similar thing was in the last Zelda game. Those are off the top of my head, there's definitely more, and I'm pretty confident it's considered a cliche.
I agree with you on the great writing; Deus Ex has one of the most excellent plots in gaming, and was really forward thinking :thumb:

Games I can think of off the top of my head where at some point you wake up in prison with no weapons and have to escape... not all of these are shooters or even first person but that is not relevant to the cliche.
Pre 1999:
Ultima Underworld (Regarding the whole game as in fact a prison... this may be debatable. Also spell casting characters may be technically weaponless but not really in the spirit.)
Duke Nukem 3d (go go mighty boot!)
Bioforge (the first weapon you pick up is somebody elses leg!)
Crono Trigger (go Ayla! (a weaponless martial arts type character))
Star Wars: Dark Forces (have fun punching out krayt dragons)
That's just from the tiny tiny sample of games that I personally own. I'm sure there are others.

[zylonbane mode]..the game no.4 is actually chrono trigger.[/zylonbane mode]

Yeah I always forget that because in the game they limited characters to 5 letter names so the main character is called Crono.

Don't forget Fade to Black (1995)!
And, technically, The Great Escape (1986). Plus, I think, Corporation (1990).

Also:
*
Little Big Adventure [1996] aka
Relentless aka
Twinsen's Adventure (starting point)
*
Lure of the Temptress [1992] (starting point)
*
The Elder Scrolls - Arena [1994] (starting point)
*
Prisoner of Ice [1995] (the quite obnoxius escape-from-the-cell-before-you-are-executed puzzle towards the end of the game)
* I haven't played this, but don't you start
Baldur's Gate II (or the expansion) imprisoned in a dungeon? (I'm also unsure if the game was released in 1999 or in 2000).
*
Half-Life [1998] (almost had forgotten this one: the 'trash compactor room' escape)

Don't forget Fade to Black (1995)!
That reminds me: the sequel to
Out of this World, called
Heart of the Alien [1994], starts with the guy in a jail, unarmed.

I think by now it has been proved "beyond a reasonable doubt" ;)

Most of the Tomb Raider games have had a level (or bit of one anyway) without weapons, as did the Syphon Filters.
It's just one of those things that shows up again and again. It annoys me a bit because in most of them you either find all your stuff in a single place later or it's an excuse for an upgrade to your armoury. And no, I don't know how else it could be done, because it'd probably be just as annoying if you didn't get your stuff back.
