Do TV shows count? Or is it just movies?

Looking at Sci Fi, there's always Moon in which part of the premise is missing home.

Cast Away is a bit of a special case, but it should fit the subject.
And if Army of Darkness counts, there must be dozens of space/sci-fi films that also do.

Moon is definitely on the list (forgot to put it on there).
And you're right, there are plenty of sci-fi films that would count, but they need to be set in contemporary times so that I can get away with using them.
Labyrinth is a good suggestion, though I'm not sure how much it really addresses Americanism specifically - the thing with Army of Darkness is that, despite its ridiculous, Ash is very much the exaggerated American, bringing American know-how into a foreign land.
As far as Cairo Time - haven't heard of it, will definitely look it up. Thanks for the suggestion!
And Peeper: Restricting it to movies, for time purposes more than anything - I'm completely swamped with work this semester and barely have time to watch the films necessary for this paper, much less TV series.

Midnight Express.
Jean Seberg in À bout de Souffle aka Breathless although she's a student so might not count.
John Wayne in Brannigan.
King Ralph!
