Everyone's entitled to his own opinion...
But I still think EM has better reasons to make this game than to spite you :p
Dia on 13/7/2013 at 15:31
Wut.
Where the hell did that come from? Nevermind. You're still rather new here and don't really know us yet, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Flavia on 13/7/2013 at 19:58
*sigh*
Yes, I'm new here and I've already seen so much anger on this forum as if EM insults you personally with every decision they make. :tsktsk: I can really see no other reason why would anyone get so upset with a frigging VIDEO GAME. And if so - how would you react if someone really wronged you? Bludgeon him to death with a newspaper? That seems proportional...
But believing than devs would rather skim through game files than actually play the game makes no sense at all. And why would they even bother rebooting game they don't give a jack shit about and one that's unlikely to immediately attract large audience?!
Besides they stated many times that they're fans of first Thiefs. Daniel Windfeld Schmidt is ghoster and Emanuel Garcia even played FM (but yes, I would also believe him more if he favour something more crazy than The 7th Crystal :p)

Since you
are relatively new here, I guess I could try to explain for the next hour and a half, but you obviously
still wouldn't have a clue. Go back and read some of the original T4 Anticipation forum threads and posts; especially the initial exchanges between TTLG members and the EM representatives. Still, guess you had to have been there; which just as obviously you weren't or you wouldn't make such asinine remarks. Generally, the people who've been posting in the T4 forum are serious fans of the Thief games, but if T4 is just '
a friggin' VIDEO GAME' to you, then perhaps you'd be more comfortable in a different forum. GenGaming, perhaps.

Not quite sure what you mean here or who Emanuel Garcia is or which (solitary?) FM he even played. The 7th Crystal is a classic among FMs and I don't believe I've ever heard it called 'crazy'. Brilliant, innovative, truly original, yes. But 'crazy' .... no.

EM are making thief 4 to make a profit, I don't think anyone is going to dispute that. Now given that they own the rights to the ip they can do whatever they want with it. Since the game is a reimagination rather than a prequel or sequel they have virtually unlimited freedom in how they choose to build the thief universe. Despite this we have seen multiple examples of EM trying to keep familiarity with the existing canon. From a business perspective this is unnecessary since the majority of sales are going to come from people loosely familiar with the previous titles at best.
Personally, I'd rather thief 4 be similar to the previous games than have no overlap whatsoever.

'Familiarity'. Wait, that's right! They called the game 'Thief' and named their protagonist 'Garrett'. Afaic, that's about the only 'familiarity' I can see with the existing canon. Oh yeah, they named a bird 'Jenivere' and NuGarrett has a bunch of the same weapons that the
original Garrett used - well, sort of. You're right about EM going for the mass market; any other 'familiarity' with the original Thief games is just paying mere lip service to an established Thief fanbase while attempting to appeal to the majority of gamers out there (as in non-Thief fans). Personally, I'd rather EM had called their game something else. Their main character as well.

Maybe they have played the original games, and like them except some things, like magic, SR, old factions etc. And want to show all of us how a true Thief game should be. I can't think any other reason why they do a Thief game and came up with such an abomination.

Familiaritys I have noticed:
Protaganist
The baron
The watch
Various city locales, i.e. northcrest, auldale bridge
Basso
Crippled burrick pub
Burricks! (Albeit only reference ala thief 2)
Similar armament
Mostly same stealth mechanics, light shadow movement noise based detection
To name a few.
I think a reimaginning in no way belittles the previous titles. I'd rather EM attempt such rather than shoehorn a forced game into the original trilogy. A sequel to deadly shadows named thief with Garrett as the protagonist wouldn't work for me as I felt Garrett returning back to a life of thievery after realising himself as the one true keeper is somewhat anticlimactic. Having said that, a sequel named keeper could work.
As to making a completely new protaganist in a completely new universe, why bother when the existing world is so richly fleshed out?

He is what he is. Of course he will be back in business. Not like he will change suddenly just because a keymark appears in his hand. He was One True Keeper until the end of TDS, always restoring the balance, Keepers included. Then he destroyed the glyphs. His work as a One True Keeper is done. His last words is just a joke. Some people like to think he will be a keeper and child will be his apprentice. That's silly.

Nope.

Existing world was rich, but now thanks to EM it looks boring.

Then what it is? A drug? Political party? Some new cult? Are you sacrificing people who don't show enough praise for Thief?
Or... a way of life?
(Sorry, couldn't help myself...)

Obviously he's one of the devs. I wouldn't bring him up if he were some random guy I met on the street this morning.
As for The 7th Crystal - I never said it's crazy, it's just most frequently quoted as best FM ever made so it could be easy to forge you're interest in FMs by bringing it on.

You'd be suprised, but there are people who think Thief would be better as pure thieving experience, without supernatural elements.

Oh. I see you've already played the game. Can you tell us what are the suprises devs promised when asked about non-human enemies? Trickster's beasts? Giand spiders? Sweels? Baron's mechanical soldiers? Builder's angels? I'm dying to know...
