Yes, you must leave the items suggested in "The Pilgrim's Path."
Each time you successfully "visit" a shrine, your journal will update. When you do all 7, your journal will update again, telling you you're done.

There is no "Moon-and-Star" in the Pilgrim's Path Temple quests.
1. The Fields of Kummu
2. The Shrine of Daring in the Temple canton
3. The Shrine of Generosity in Vivec's Palace canton
4. The Puzzle Canal shrine
5. Shrine of Justice is in the Gnisis temple
6. The Koal Cave Shrine of Valor
7. The Shrine of Pride, just NE of the Ghostgate entrance.
Sounds like you're confusing something from the main quest with the Temple quest...
