Hi :)
I've been meaning to try SS2 for ages. Just got round to doing so and after getting set up, it looks like it's going to be great :)
Anyway, because the game is quite old I looked for some updates and found the obvious graphical ones (rebirth, shtup etc) but my question is about the massive Straylight ADaoB update.
The changes in the readme are endless, and it seems to make some significant changes to the way the game plays, balance, weapons and many many other things.
Should I play the game as it was meant to be played to start with?? Or is it recommended to use this unofficial update and attempt the game in this modified state right from the start??
Secondly, is there a way to alter the FOV?
Thanks for reading, and have a nice day :thumb:

I'm not aware of any attempt to change the FOV so i'd say no.
Personally I'm tempted to say go ahead and install stuff that does not drastically affect gameplay but there are even subtle changes that you may not be aware of that will affect your experience. Who knows if irrational still has the best vision of the game, given the resources we now have at our disposal but I'd say you can't go wrong playing it stock.
On run 2 install the graphical updates and straylight's patch + whatever other odds and ends you can find that are compatible, though I wouldn't get into the hardcore gameplay altering mods until you've sort of gotten used to the game.
The first few times for you should be special. You won't get them back so don't ruin it :)

I agree. Play the game as it is now a couple of times :)
Then do that update, then play the game again... then start downloading the mods (there's a list around here somewhere) and start playing those

Imo Straylight's fixes are all very reasonable, well founded and in line with the game. Playing it you won't miss out on anything but bugs.
I'd rather leave out Rebirth (for the start).

I've been reading up around here and it does seem that many think that Rebirth, whilst maybe offering higher res textures, can take away from the original mood of the game.

I don't really prefer Rebirth over default models or wise versa since I can't see much difference with my bad eyesight. :erm:

I play with
Straylights Mod,
Shtup,
and the weapons dont degrade thingy.
I thought about adidionally using the flatliner mod,
where you sound off the alarm when you try to destroy them,
so you have to hack them and
the Arcaniac Shock2TrueReduxGraphicsPack,
but both would replace the schock2.gam and im not sure
if my already installed mods would get corrupted from the Change.
So i think i just play it through this Time and the next Time i try the other Mods.

There is only one gamesys you can use at a time, and Straylight's mod uses a modded GAM. So you'd be basicly deleting it's effect if using another gamesys mod. :)

So to recap, first time through, just the shtup mod to keep the feel of the original, but with a few updated graphics?
I don't fully know what the shtup and rebirth mods add to the game.

SHTUP (Shock Texture Update Project) introduces high res textures for objects and environment. Rebirth replaces most of the enemy models with new models and fitting skins for them.
