I've made a demo for a functioning non-linear campaign.
You can download it here:

It uses tnhScript for setting campaign QVars, and a custom squirrel script.
Players start in the "hub" Mission One. They then choose to either play Mission Two or Three, in any order. After each mission they are returned to the hub to choose another mission. Once both Mission Two and Three are complete, the player moves onto the final mission, Mission Four.

Well, that was incredible interesting on a technical side, thanks for sharing.
A non-linear campaign could be a really interesting gameplay, especially with an item carry-over back to the hub mission - in example think of a campaign to open a tomb and you need certain artifacts from all over the town.
Overall a very nice fan campaign, it was very hard to find loot, I loved the cubic architecture and clever use of custom textures.
Almost got lost in that mazey layout.

I haven't tried it, but I'm impressed that after all these years we're still getting novel innovative new FM ideas!

Can't test the demo right now, hence this question: is the state of the hub mission retained, after we come back to it?

Not without manual work. You can use a Campaign QVar to detect "Yes, <x> mission is complete" and set things in the mission based on that, but it's nothing like retaining a level state a la System Shock 2.

Ah, Ok. So, a time passed needs to be assumed and only critical changes made, as needed, based on conditiins. Still, very cool thing to do. I'll check it out in next few days.

Yeah - in theory you could set up campaign QVars to store the state and location of every guard and object in the mission, but it would be a lot of work.

Not the strongest of Nicked's creations, to be brutally honest, but an enjoyable one, if you only have a minute, while working remotely and waiting for everyone to join the group call. Could be more challenging, but a big plus for a campaign - always plays better than a single mission! ;)
