I was suprised to see Gunther run away in my battle against him in Paris the last time I played through Deus Ex. After Gunther got hit by a LAM explosion, he ran out of the room and went into "running servant" mode.

He can wimp out after a certain amount of damage, as you've seen, but I killswitch him.

-claw I find the aug up that you get from Reyes more usefull... a gep round serves to purpose well enough, or two sniper rilfe head shots....

I took the coward's way out of fighting him. I opened up the room with 4 turrets and set them on kill the enemy. I said hello to gunther from the top of the stairs and ran for my life. Leading him into the room wasn't too bad. He needed a little coxing from my pistol for the last little bit. After that I let the turrets do my work for me. Just let Gunthor go down on one knee occasionally so they can lock on.
I thought Gunthor didn't have a killswitch, so I tried that way and it worked.

A friend of mine claims that if you play your cards JUST right through the entire game (give him the gun in mission 1, do NOT kill everyone in castle Clinton because Hermann feels threatened by the new nano-aug agents, etc.), You will be able to get him to defect, and thus you will not have to fight him in the cathedral.
Is this true? Has anybody managed to do this? And if someone has, what EXACTLY did you do or not do?

I doubt you could get Gunther to defect considering how he felt about Anna. Yet,
you have an option to using the kill phrase - IIRC you could ask him to switch sides.
He immediately attacked the one time I tried that. It would make more sense if
there were in fact some way to play so that you could convince him to switch.
