I decided to give Noita a try this weekend, and it's fun, but borders on the excessively frustrating. I sure hope they put in some sort of checkpoint system (when you make it to the portal, let's say) for players like me who want a little less hardcore of a game. Having to start all over from the very beginning every time you die, no matter how far you've managed to progress, gets boring after awhile.

I'm finding it plays best when you replay a seed that works really well for you. Now that I know my favorite seed frontwards and backwards and can get the best equipment in a hurry, I can get to the final levels pretty regularly now and can experiment a lot more. The enemies, well I don't think they're randomly spawned, but there's still a randomness to their pathing, and sometimes I think some things are still randomized, and there's so much to explore that it isn't boring to replay it.
I also just figured out what to do with the scrolls you find, or what you can do with them. Kind of obvious once you think about it for a second. edit: You put them on the platforms with the weird text and see what happens.

I ended up kinda drifting away from this back then. Love the deep simulation, but the whole Spelunky-esque roguelike platforming really ain't my bag. I'll try to return to it and see if I can get into it now that it's done.

FYI the rogue-like platforming down the vanilla path is just the surface level of the game. I think of it more as a sandbox for constructing your own way to play it, like the way you make your own mix of powers, spells, potions, and alchemy, and the way different areas play to different styles.
And then on top of all that there's a lot to actually explore, like hidden and special areas, and to experiment with, like mixing spells and alchemy or taking special objects to or doing special actions in special places or against specific AI, just to see what happens. I think a lot of one's enjoyment with the game comes down to how interested you are in playing and experimenting with its systems for its own sake.

Boy, it's tough!

It is!
Played a few rounds today, most of them were pretty short. But one I managed to go on for 52 minutes! Found some good wands and a Healthium potion early on. Fought giant spiders and was blinded by a hostile wizard who then proceded to kick my ass.
