I'm actually curious about the recording details, especially in regard to the drums. It's a killer song, though, I've probably listened to it a dozen times over the course of the weekend. It reminds me a bit of
Random 1-8 era Muse, although it's got its own thing going on.
Which isn't to say the original song in this thread ain't quality, but this is much more my thing.
no magic to it man, just painstaking tracking, setting each sample/beat with a different volume and stereo position using hexadecimalz, with a bit of distortion for REFRESHMENT B-U
and each individual hit sample was from a free archive or just stuff i've picked up around THE NET, no loops used as i said. it's all a case of finding samples that sound like they work together and belong in the same drumkit, which is hard when you get all your samples basically with google. but practice makes perfect i guess :o

Ah, that makes sense then. The drum divide ignored by not actually using live drums.
Still, they sound organic enough, so props. I've done a fair amount of combing through drums samples and then carefully tracking them and it's not easy. "Painstaking," indeed.

If we're talking about technical limits of the sort "a mic with a frequency range up to 44000Hz can't record 48000Hz" then there's no way to bypass a limit like that, obviously.
As for the other thing, I don't know. I started out with making my AdLib soundcard produce funny noises. The software/hardware I use now provides me with all kinds of neat features, and it is certainly nice to have access to them. Some of the things (flinging around some 100 MB of sample data) would have been impossible to do with my old gear.
However, if I listen to some of my old Tracker stuff, there's creativity in it, a lot more than in my recent bits. Some of it certainly came from the need to circumvent a limitation of the software - all the knobs and automatisms make me lazy. Why emulate delay with multiple notes in different volumes when I just can plug the box on?
I know that being lazy is a shitty reason to give, but that's not exactly my point. I mean, while trying to carve out Michelangelo's David from a wooden block with a kitchen knife, I could end up carving Schatten's Daveh - limitations can be very inspiring by themselves.
(obligatory shout-out to all DromEd wrestlers)

Quick interjection from someone who has no idea what the hell you guys are talking about.

ONION BOB IT IS TIME TO BREAK FREE OF THE SHACKLES OF BOARDS OF CANADA
But until that time comes this is hands down the best shit ever. I particulary enjoy those xylophone(?) touches in Function Creep, and what's more it sounds complete; I always lament that you cut things off too short (mainly because they are works in progress, I know). I highly suggest you get an album together, maybe your best stuff over the past couple of years because I dunno about you but I can see the growth. And get some copies printed, with artwork and all.

I downloaded some of your stuff about a year back, and I remember thinking it was quite the shiznit TM. You've definately got my vote.
Now, if only I still had access to the PC with your music on, I could actually listen to it again...

ONION BOB IT IS TIME TO BREAK FREE OF THE SHACKLES OF BOARDS OF CANADA
you are, of course, right about this - i mean even boards of canada can't make boards of canada sound that interesting any more. But i'm just expectorating the last remnants of this phase (campfire, head).
cheers mang B-U
