Noinch, Noinch, Noinch, Schmokin Weed, Schmokin' Weed, Doin' Coke, Drinkin' Beers... - by Scots Taffer

Sorry for the thread title.
For anyone who's even vaguely interested in the trials and tribulations of knowing someone going through an addiction of some kind, or for anyone who wants to see how good a friend can be, or for any of those Hollywood dirt sniffers who love to root around in people's trash, or anyone who simply wants to read a well written account of a true life drama that is not only riveting, scary and humourous, but also has a satisfactory, happy ending? (unless you're a certain unscrupulous documentary creator)
(
http://silentbobspeaks.com/?m=20060328) The first of the nine-part series chronicling Jason Mewes (the actor who plays Jay) battle with drug addiction, as told by his friend, acting partner and writer/director Kevin Smith.
All 9 parts are now up, I've been tagging along, checking every so often for the next update and install... some of the waits have been heavy going since there were some cliffhangers in there, but thankfully, it all worked out in the end.
Seriously though, it opens your eyes about drug addiction if you weren't already quite clued in to all the dirty specifics about how nasty it can get.
Kevin Smith is quite the friend.

It helps when you have friends that never give up on you, because people who are undergoing personal battles like that are in a constant need of positive feedback. To me, the fact that someone has friends like that is obvious enough an indication that underneath that reduced shell is a happy and well balanced person waiting to be brought out. It's a judgmental world, though, and people tend to let their assumptions get ahead of themselves. I guess Smith felt like reaching out, although if I were him I wouldn't have bothered.

On-again-off-again-drug-battle stories are a cheap commodity. I don't know why I found this one gripping. Maybe because Smith and Mewes have never ever acted like celebrities. Smith's blogs and DVD commentaries don't give a feel of Hollywood Star Director, they're more like some guy you know saying "I just felt creative and scratched this film together, reckon it worked out alright what do you think?". More like distant acquaintances than celebrities.
Maybe that's why when Smith was told that his helping Mewes wasn't helping, I felt all "shit, dude" instead of you know ... not caring because this is just shit that happens to rock stars.

Only two parts in so far, but this is a cracking read. I'm stoked that Jason has got over all his drug problems because the world would be a much poorer place without people like him.
Sadly for every kid like Mewes there's another 100 who don't make it (yay prohibition and under-funded rehab programmes) but let's leave that there.

Read a pretty good book about addiction, I heard the author has sexed up some parts but it is still a good read, it's called 'in a million little pieces' by James Fray. Especially the chapter where he goes to the dentist is great, highly recommended.

"Sexed up"? The whole thing is an out-and-out lie (although I believe it's an entertaining read, regardless).
Coincidentally, the episode of South Park premiering tonight is a piss-take of Million Little Pieces...

Though I haven't read the whole of MLP, the extracts I saw were some of the most embarassingly cheap and cack-handed prose I had the misfortune to read.

I thought he just lied about the amount of time he spend in jail? If it is all a lie he is very good at it I must say, it
is a very entertaining book. It has this great 'glad I am not you' quality, but since he is probably filthy rich by now that doesn't shine like it should :erg:

Don't derail this thread about that cheap hack fucking book, it's deliberately cliched, ham-fisted, trashily written bullshit.

There was a (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103469&highlight=oprah) thread about him not long ago, the guy's a phraud, phoney & phink and writes like a 9-year-old. If you're a glutton for punishment, he wrote a sequel too.

the gossip sites have seen fit to print only the portion of the Jason Mewes story I told at UPenn (that portion being what said sites seem to feel is the only interesting aspect of Mewes' life)
I think I've read that part somewhere, and was intrigued to know more. So thanks for the link, Scots.
