The main villain of the Ultima game, the (

http://www.shiftedphase.com/~dino/ultima/uinfo/general/guardian.php#origins) origin. The official explanation is generally deemed week and unconvincing by the fans.
The Guardian is a immensely powerful extradimensional being bent on conquering worlds after worlds.
The hero of Arx Fatalis is a Guardian from the Noden, an extradimensional place. It is explained that Guardians are very powerful entitiers, so potent that they are voluntarily crippled before they are sent outside of the Noden, for bad things have happened with power-crazy Guardians before that precaution was taken. At the end of Arx, your master, that
Dark Crystal Mystic-looking creatures, arrives to take you back to the Noden, for you have become too powerful for this world.
So, of course, the cosmology of both game series are disconnected.
However, one can imagine the evil Ultima Guardian is an example of what compelled the Noden masters to limit their Guardian's powers when they sent them out on a quest.
Another nod: in the Ultima games, you play the Avatar, and you battle the Guardian (since Ultima 7, at least).
In Arx Fatalis, you play a Guardian, and you battle the Avatar (of Akbaa). ;)

um well in case you didn't know Arx Fatalis is one big nod to the Ultima/ Ultima Underworld series. and also while the game was still being made the developers were trying to get the rights to call the game Underworld 3, but sadly failed.
