No XP is awesome, but buying skills with gold is just as bad. Sure, you arent reward for stuff like headshots, but its still BAAAAAD

Wait. Are people saying Garrett isn't capable of learning, of improving?
It might look a bit weird if EM required you to 'level up' in order to access some mid level thiefty skills when Garrett is eluded to as The Master Thief from the get-go.
Looking Glass wanted to get away from Character Sheets and Skill Stats and all that table-top RPG stuff with Thief - and I think that was big part of what gave Thief its flavour, so I can't say I'm sorry to see the back of XP in Eidos Montreal's take on Thief.
But I'll hold out on being actually happy until I see T4 actively include features that give satisfaction to the player for using their own skill and judgement. Shooting a wine bottle at 50 yards with a bow and arrow shouldn't be a mindless activity.

It's tricky, levelling and improvement systems are in themselves contrary to reality. Often the case will be that an individual will reach a plateau through training or experience and then work to maintain that level of performance.
It could reflect the fact that Garrett has been missing from The City for some time and so has gotten a little rusty.
Anyway the Upgrades seem to me to reflect improvements to the equipment Garrett is using, not enhancements to his base performance. It's a bad craftsman that blames his tools but it's a foolish one that works with anything less than the best he can acquire.
For those still cold on the Upgrades thing consider this: It's closer to the old school load out shop because now you have to spend your money wisely. Do you have enough cash to go into the next mission with a good balance of Arrows or do you want to take a gamble and invest in better lock-picks for the sake of future missions? Just like Focus you don't have to use the upgrades!

I find it amusing that there are some who have been hoodwinked into believing the protagonist for NuThief is the same Garrett from the classic THIEF games...
He is not.
NuGarrett is a collector and kleptomaniac, with a noticeably lower IQ score...a corset-wearing, chatty-Kathy, who likes to play with makeup...With a different eye, history, time, and universe, he uses his non-Garrett superpowers to Swoop (multi-directional levi-jet) and Focus (omni-vision)...to clearly reveal himself to be the impostor that he is.
And I find it amusing that despite of all that you want this
outrageous impostor to have "real" Garrett's voice. Make up your mind already. :p

And I really don't like the part about Garrett being a "connoisseur" of fine things, and dressing up his apartment with shiny stuff and bling bling. That's very anti-Garrett, at least to date.
I was looking through the concept art thread and noticed this:

I'm pretty sure in the lower left there are display cases for Garrett to display his stuff a la the Skyrim Thieve's Guild or player houses.

Yup, as I said elsewhere, this is supposed to be some kind of trophy collection which is part of the re-imagined Garrett's attitude towards stealing.

I see two positive sides to this, and two negative sides.
1) It's good that EM apparently cares about the feedback they get.
2) It's good that we won't have completely unrealistic XP rewards popping up during play.
3) It's scary that EM are making such major changes at this late stage.
4) Switching from XP to loot decreases the reward for stealthy play.

...Switching from XP to loot decreases the reward for stealthy play.
How so? I don't see it as being any more damaging to the stealth gameplay than the "collect X amount of gold" objectives in T1 & 2.
Chade on 14/10/2013 at 21:47
Yeah, accumulating loot is largely neutral wrt to rewarding stealth. But XP actively rewarded stealth. So switching from xp to loot decreases the reward for stealth.

Rambo-ing through the levels lets you steal all the loot, right.
Maybe a nice feature would be if the prices available to you depended on how you played.
