Back when they convinced themselves that they knew Thief better than us....

It took a while to learn the complex controls. Numbers 1,2,3,4 – There were different types of peeking: peeking forward, peeking sideways,
peeking upside down. They had all these things that were very complex and it worked for the hardcore gamers, but a lot of people backed off early on because it was very difficult.
...and now the latest snake in the grass...

The sense of progression comes from slowly mastering all the intricate controls in the game.
Do they really think we are just morons and to any of you who will actually spend your hard earned money on this game - Have fun traveling from hotspot to hotspot while you wish that Stephen Russells voice was in your headphones/speakers. Goodbye Hammers, Pagans, and everything magical about this "revered" series. Spend $50 on the disfigured and mangled remnants of an unsuccessfully resurrected corpse. If their intentions for making a new Thief game were pure from the start, they could have avoided all of this, but in the end, greed won out again. FrankenThief 2014.
Enjoy.

If they had another year or two, they might eventually come around to the proper Thief mindset. Even so, I give them credit for being willing to dump the XP system at this late date.

I think we might need to put the optimism on hold for a moment. Sure, there's no XP system, but I was assuming that also meant ditching the Upgrade system, because how would you upgrade Garrett without XP points to spend?
But if you check out latest (
http://www.pcgames.de/Thief-4-PC-98521/Specials/Thief-PC-Version-des-Klassiker-Reboots-in-der-Hands-on-Vorschau-1091873/) gameplay video in (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142521) this thread, you'll notice the subscreen where you upgrade all of Garrett's abilities (right around the 3:15 mark) has him paying for them with GOLD, not XP. So you have things like:
Aim Speed 1
Damage Increase 1
Damage Reduction 1
Improved Melee 1
Lockpick Sweet Spot 1
are all available for upgrade, just by shelling out some cash. How is this any different than an XP system? Yes, it's slightly different because Garrett isn't acquiring "points" for performing a headshot or a lockpick or a pickpocket. But you're still improving the supposed "Master Thief's" talents beyond the level of...master?
I'll want to hear more on this before jumping for joy, because IMO, an upgrade system for Garrett is the real issue, not the XP system. Both are bad, but having either one turns Thief into some sort of ridiculous RPG lite. Changing the method from XP to Gold really just masks the primary issue.

Player skill will also be the determining factor in how you'll feel you're progressing as throughout Thief 4. Schmidt explained to me that there are many ways to do things in the game and the intent is to deliver a rich enough experience that you'll feel yourself mastering nuanced maneuvers you couldn't nail down when starting the game.
This confused me at first, but I'm guessing this means as you acquire more money, you'll upgrade your skills up the tree (Aim Speed 1, Aim Speed 2, etc.). Tbh, paying for these skills with money makes even less sense than paying for them with XP, so they haven't solved anything, and possibly just made it worse. Not every Thief player is a loot hunter.

Grey area.
Buying a potion enhances your abilities somewhat, as does buying specialist arrows.
If it's skills you're upgrading it'll seem silly, but what if it's equipment? Bow upgrade allowing faster aiming? Different arrows dealing more or less damage?
King No One on 13/10/2013 at 23:32
Yeah, better quality/more specialized equipment, directly related to the amount of operational funds you are able to acquire in game; sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
Honestly the lengths the hate brigade go to when another of their legitimate concerns goes away. At this rate they'll hate on the game for not using DromEd.

As good as this news is, I'd like to remind everyone that we're impressed with EM for not having stuff like '40xp headshot'. Standards for the game really have dropped, haven't they?

Well, lowering expectations is the key to being able to enjoy this game on
any sort of level. Besides which, I hold a lot of respect for this decision, because that right there is bucking the modern trend of attaching token RPG-elements to game genres where they have no business being. This coming from a guy who loves RPGs, I
hate it when an action game purports to offer a 'customizable experience' that are really just there for the sake of it. Offering tiny incremental improvements to skills that the character already has, for no better reason than to try and pander to the RPG crowd. I love RPGs, but I also love action games, and I hate it when a game is stretched thinner so as to be as inoffensive to as many different tastes as possible. Don't be Skyrim, Thief. We already have a Skyrim, it's called Skyrim. And that isn't even a very good RPG, but that's a rant for somewhere else...
Assuming of course, that is actually what EM has gotten rid of. If all of the RPG-lite crap is still there, you just unlock it a different way... then my respect goes back to the dismal standard it was at before.
