I'm running Win 7 x64; everything works for me except that no voices play at any time -- and possibly not music either.
Sound effects play just fine -- video plays, controls are okay, saving works, etc etc... but I can't hear what anyone says which makes the opening to the game a bit... empty seeming.
I've turned all the sound volume sliders up and hardware off, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

Did it give any problems on install? I know the snd.crf files have given me issues before. You could try copying them over from the CD

If you've been using Creative ALchemy, then FYI the most recent builds from the past few months (v1.4x) have been broken, period. You have to use a Dsound.dll from an older version like v1.30 or v1.25. The problem is being discussed (

EDIT:-
I hope you don't mind if I hijack this thread.
Question:- Are there any known problems with running SS2 in 24 channels? I recently discovered that it's supported by Thief 1/2 and thus far all of the EAX effects seems to be working fine in SS2. Mind you, I've yet to progress pass the opening scripted sequence after Googles was awoken from his cryo-sleep.

I just set the sound channels to 128 and couldn't find a problem. Doesn't mean it's supported though.
How did you find out 24 channels were supported in Thief? Serious question. Because short of setting up a dedicated sound chamber in which play 24 sounds at a time and then listening very closely, I cannot imagine how.

It's listed there in the Thief 2 v1.18 patch notes.
Quote:
Increased maximum sound channel usage to 24 channels and reset default to 12 channels.

The original (pre-patch) readme file of SS2 mentions decreasing channels from the default 8 to 4 to achieve a better framerate and that is all I could find about the matter. Neither the manual nor the patch readme mention sound channels again.
Not that surprising though if it was patched into Thief 2.
It might be possible to repeat whatever they did to increase the max channels, but I doubt it's worth it, as you will almost certainly never hear more than 16 sound sources at a time in the game.
Getting EAX to work reliably on Vista/Win7 machines with any soundcard would be a more worthwhile goal. I take it you run ALchemy successfully with SS2 on a Creative card, Eva?

Yeah, ALchemy works fine with all four Dark engine games on my machine.
These are the settings that I use for DE games.

Using more than 126 channels can break the X-Fi mode change feature. I've found that trying to switch modes after running a game that was configured to use 128 channels can crash the driver, requiring a reboot (this was true of XP as well, I found).
I definitely read that it's a technical detail of the X-Fi processor, but it's been so long that I can't remember the exact specifics. Maybe something along the lines of only 127 simultaneous voices supported, with the last channel of the 128 being utilised for like buffering or something.
