XSplit doesn't appear to break anything here either. (Thanks for the suggestion - I know it doesn't help your problem, but it's something I've been looking for). Thief still plays videos with it installed.
I hate to say it - but I'm honestly not sure what the problem is. It looks like you're not able to play any AVI videos regardless of coded so I don't think it's Thief related. If you have the DirectX SDK installed along with your development software I'd be tempted to check the DirectX control panel to make sure that you've not disabled anything there - I once struggled for a while working out why a game wouldn't run correctly before realising I'd disabled DirectX hardware acceleration through the DirectX settings.

How can VLC play them, then?
I don't think I have the SDK installed. DXDiag suggests that all the acceleration options are enabled.
I'm a bit worried, now. Maybe I should take the 'drastic' option. Who knows what other things might be broken without me knowing it?
I think the last time I tried a non-destructive Windows install was back on XP... Does 7 have a way of doing that without deleting everything?

As far as I know it's similar to XP - but I've not personally done it on Windows 7, just XP and SBS2003. I wish I could give a more productive answer, but unfortunately I've not tried it myself.

No problem, easy enough to look up.
I'm very thankful for you taking all this time and effort to help me out. I know we didn't exactly come to a satisfying conclusion, but that's just how it goes sometimes. I knew something had to be unusually wrong with my system when all of the regular fixes in the FAQ weren't working.
I'll have to do some preparations and just-in-case backups before I do this, and I may have to postpone actually doing it for another day. But rest assured, I'll return when it's done and let you know what the outcome was.
'Tis surely the work of the Trickster, this. But you have done the Builder's work, my friend. Thank you.

No problem - and you've been just as patient in trying different things out. If you do find a solution (even if it was "nuked it from orbit") then a quick post will be helpful for future reference.
I hope you get this sorted - and hopefully you can enjoy the Thief games regardless of the problems.

I fixed it.
Good fricken' LORD, I finally fixed it.
Reinstalling Windows didn't fix it. Updating my GFX and sound drivers didn't fix it. Installing ffdshow didn't fix it. You know what did fix it?
...
Uninstalling DivX.
I'm not going to question it.

Fantastic! Out of interest have the details of the AVI splitter changed?
Glad you have it working in any case.

Yeah, now it draws exactly like the XP version. See: (

I'm glad too. That was driving me stir crazy! DivX, the silent killer... I'll remember this.
Currently having a blast with a fully upgraded, patched, enhanced ThiefG now. :) And even though I eventually just stumbled across the answer, I wouldn't have gotten to the point of uninstalling random things, had you not helped me eliminate absolutely every other possibility first. I owe you my sanity. If I could invite you over to watch an AVI movie, I'd go out and buy a giant tub of popcorn right now. :D
