Hi everyone. I've played Deus Ex for a long time and love it. However this latest time I've attempted to play through it for some reason the game has NO LIGHTS. I mean the light models are there but they project no light in the environment, thus everything is very pitch black, unless using the flashlight aug. I think this may be driver related as I have the latest ATI drivers.
Has ANYONE at all had this same problem and if so please tell me how to resolve this. I've perused the posts and nothing has popped out about this specific issue.
I use an ATI Radeon 8500. Please TTLG you are my only hope. :)
Thanks in advance.

I also use an ATI Radeon 8500, and I have no problems with Deus Ex. So the problem isn't the card. But I have never updated the drivers. So this must be a driver issue. Maybe someone with more tech expertise than me can tell you how to revert to older drivers.

So it's not rendering the lightmap layers. Ick. Have you tried the OpenGL or software rendering modes? Or, in case of emergency, Glide mode via a Glide wrapper?

Yes I have tried it in OpenGL, Software render, and with a Glide wrapper. Same thing. I also fiddled with the advanced options and no dice. The only thing that seemed to do anything was setting the NoLighting value to TRUE. In that case everything was lit up, but with no shadows, dark areas, or anything so thats not good. God I really dont want to consign this game to the dead bin. Anything that could help would be greatly appreciated.

Tried reinstalling the game?
Sounds to me like a corrupted data file.

Hmmm no i havent tried reinstalling. One problem is my disk is still in california waiting to be shipped up with the rest of my stuff. If anyone knows which file it might be, maybe I could locate it, or someone could e-mail it to me.

Also check your video driver's settings. I'm not sure whether you were referring to the settings in deusex.ini or your driver. You might consider using the ATI Catalyst-based DNA drivers. (

An old, but absolutely fantastic tweaking guide is available here: (
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/deusex/print.shtml)
It describes what settings in the various sections of your deusex.ini will affect the different rendering modes, and in what ways.
Good luck.

Hellloooo moop-- he already said there aren't any lights even in software rendering mode. That means something's screwed up with the game itself.

Yeah, I skimmed over it and posted solutions to both hardware and deus ex-related problems. Send complaints to /dev/null next time.

No.
